Nuemann U87?

I tried, you can achieve good result only if you'll record a dybamic mic near the cab and u87 far from and mix it, dyn mic make louder then u87.
I heard that if you make cabinet not loud and record u87 near the cab, you'll achieve interesting result, but i never tried.

I have an U89 but I never tried it in front of the cab. And I will never do :)

If I had more than one as well as a lot of $$ (so I would not have to worry about it) I would use/try it probably together with an SM57. I would use the SM57 relatively on-axis and the U89 more off-axis, maybe on a bottom-speaker.

Did it in college once when I did a comparison between a few different mics.
It was cool, pretty accurate sound similar to what was in the room, I didn't try it in a mix at all just mixed a T bone ribbon mic, a sm57 and the U87. To be honest it was the nicest sounding of the 3, followed by the ribbon mic and then the 57. Wheteher it woud have been too "nice" to work in a mix or not I've no idea.

I have always wanted to try this, but i don't have the money for a U87. with the natural and linear response curve I would imagine, that using a U87 would yield very natural and warm tone but would retain all the aggressiveness that the cab has. In a sense it would accurately capture all the mojo of a cabinet as if you were there in person.

I have 2 main mics, a SM57 and a KSM27 (the condenser versions of the SM models) and found the 27 to be more natural warmer sounding. It captured the aggressiveness that the 57 did, but wasn't as harsh on the highs and was way warmer. A better more refined 57 basically with a flatter response curve. I could only imagine that the 87 would be a huge upgrade yet again.

but then again i like guitars to be recorded with condensers over dynamics, just my preference.
