NZ scene

yeah... demoniac!
they recorded 'prepare for war' and 'stormblade' in wellington. has anyone heard any of this material? it's pretty shit when compared to 'the fire and the wind', the album they made after relocating to england and getting a few new members together. when demoniac were in new zealand their style was totally different.. it was only when the vocalist behemoth and guitarist heimdall (sam totman, a true fucking legend) moved to england and got herman li (guitar), matej setinc (drums) and diccon harper (bass) that they developed their more melodic style. the eagle spreads its wings, daggers and ice, demoniac spell, demons of the night, the fire and the wind... AWESOME SONGS! FUCKING AWESOME, to be precise. it's a shame the band split up though... but sam totman and herman li went on to form the power metal band DRAGONFORCE, which is FAR BETTER. dragonforce is my fave band, totman and li are fucking gods. has anyone heard them before? www.dragonforce.com HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!
im from south otago by the way, no metal scene down here but i living in christchurch all last year and theres some decent bands around.. anyone heard of Aphalon? pretty awesome black metal..

keep it metal. demoniac rule, check out dragonforce if you don't know them and are into power metal..... amazing shit! they are on www.mp3.com just search for them..

download THIS track... Black Winter Night.. its amazing. off their NEW album (2003) Valley of the Damned

trust me, its fucking great! :D

I have Prepare For War on tape somewhere. I also have the Head Like A Hole EP with the proto-Demoniac tracks on it.

New Zealand used to have a fucking good scene going in the early 1990s. Demise, Human, Malevolence, Daemon, Sinistrous Diabolus, and a few others whose names escape me now. Human and Malevolence are still going. 8 Foot Sativa is pretty much the biggest metal band in NZ now. Also not previously mentioned (I think) was Meatyard, a brilliant brutal death metal band. There are also hundreds of utterly shit faceless nu-metal clone bands (Blindspott anyone?), but they don't count.

this is the now decesed band of the guitarist from my band Black Harvest.

I used to have Daemon's album, but I stupidly traded it, thinking I'd be able to get another copy:cry:. I saw them supporting Pantera and COC, but they got toally fucked over Spinal Tap style with technical difficulties. Do you know if it's still possible to get copies of the album?

yeah, i think they're still available...

but if not, i could ask Xanataph to make another copy of it
and you could buy it of him....(if he gets of his lazy fukkin ass.)

and since you were at the gig in anti-christchurch for pantera.
do you remember anything about how daemon actually went?

i didnt get to go to that gig.:ill:

Yeah, the band played well, until the bass shit itself completely. Even though the crowd was mostly morons, they were still well received. The guitar player ended up going through every metal pose and cliche in the book, taking the piss and really enjoying himself! He seemed to be like a man possessed because of the technical problems, playing twice as well. It was one of the best (for enthusiasm and sheer guts) and worst (for the technical problems and the odd moron who didn't get it) I've ever seen.

Yes... I know this is an old thread but I feel I have to bring it back from the dead. Metal is alive and well in New Zealand - don't believe a word from any fool who tries to tell you otherwise... and anyone lucky enough to be in NZ on May 1st should try and get to "Audience with the Devil" at Galatos in Auckland. A night of fantastic metal featuring:

Dawn Of Azazel - 'Militant Audio Apocalypse' - a mixture of black/death/grind/nastiness - About to embark on their first European tour, in support of their album "The Law of the Strong" - EVERYONE SHOULD HEAR THIS ALBUM... it'll certainly shut up anyone who thinks nothing metal happens in NZ... http://dawnofazazel.orcon.net.nz

Ulcerate - Techy Grind/Death... pure brutality, they have just added a second guitarist and a new bassist and are sounding better than ever - these guys deserve international attention, excellent musicianship (the drumming is brilliant) http://ulcerate.orcon.net.nz

Backyard Burial - stoner grind... mixing grind and death with extra downtuned evilness, easily my favourite NZ metal band (ok, it helps they are local... and I used to play in a band with one of their guitarists)... this band breads fanatical fans like no other band in NZ :headbang: about to head into the studio (in five days) to record the follow up to "Repeat Offender" - the new album is gonna be called "Appetite for Abduction" and with tracks like "I Always Inhale," "You Show Me Yours And I'll Show You Mine" and "You Sleep We Creep" it is set to be killer... http://www.geocities.com/backyardburial

Graymalkin - grind with touches of death - rad vocals, great musicianship (drummer is also in Dawn of Azazel and bassist and guitarist have recently joined Ulcerate) - these guys keep getting better and better and after a great year last year will destroy all in the next couple years for sure.... http://graymalkin.nzmetal.com

Corpsefeast - old skool death - they've been around for something like 10 years, but have just resurfaced last year playing shows around the north island and leaving a trail of new fans in their wake... http://www.geocities.com/corpsefeast13/

Aphelon - black metal - yeah, well they're more than just black metal... i haven't actually seen these guys live yet (they have the audacity to live in the South Island and I'm kinda stuck in the North) but their recently released album 'The Ethos Elite' is fucking wicked and they have a strong following in (anti)Christchurch... http://www.aphelon.co.nz

Forced to Submit - grind/death - featuring the guitarists from Dawn of Azazel and the most pit friendly/violent vocalist I have seen in a long time... brutal death sounds that lend themselves to ultra-brutal mosh pits... (unsure if they have a website, i don't think they do)

Skuldom - evil black metal nastiness - female fronted three piece (vocals, bass + drums) - the word evil just keeps popping back into my head while trying to think of what to say about this band... known for their bloody stage antics and music that slays all it touches... (unsure if they have a website, i don't think they do)

Slave Cadaver - a covers band, specialising in Carcass covers... who couldn't like that? :headbang: (unsure if they have a website, i don't think they do)

so yeah, check out the websites as most of them have mp3s available... and these are just the bands playing on one night - there is a lot of metal happening in NZ and a lot of it is easily as good as metal you will find anywhere else...

p.s. sorry about the long post... nah fuck it, no I'm not... I could write page upon page about NZ metal and anyone who says there is no metal scene in NZ deserves a slap upside the head \m/

What about Misled By Lies??? They started up and it sounds like this band was gonna be fucking killer!!! HUGE!!! Great Melodic Death metal!

Misled By Lies were killer \m/ they broke up a while ago, with two of the members of the band going on to other notable projects... (other members might have gone on to wonderous things, but at the moment i can only think of two members who have gone on to new bands)

the drummer Jamie moved on to form Bloodwreath, who later became Ulcerate (http://ulcerate.orcon.net.nz) and also played in Misadventures in Self-Surgery for their annoyingly short life... definitely check out the latest Ulcerate mp3, Scorn the Dethroned, from their website - then send them some cash for the whole CD... it's definitely worth hearing both of the CDs...

and one of the guitarists, Mat, went on to play in Promise of Bloodshed (brutal metalcore... released a cool album called 'Hatred Inherit' but split up shortly after... http://promise.orcon.net.nz has two mp3s) and also plays in Evil Priest, who would be NZ's most well known hardcore band (it's a bit of a super-group featuring ex-members of most of NZ's influential hardcore bands of a few years ago ;) they've released two good albums, but no website or mp3s available :( both the Promise of Bloodshed and Evil Priest CDs were released by local label Jailbait Records, whose website seems to have fallen over (http://www.jailbait.co.nz/)- but for 'metal' fans I would definitely recommend Promise of Bloodshed as a pretty metalic hardcore, and Evil Priest are a great hardcore band - with some nice sing-alongs and 'horse riding' bits for pit insanity...

RIP Mislead By Lies...
