they recorded 'prepare for war' and 'stormblade' in wellington. has anyone heard any of this material? it's pretty shit when compared to 'the fire and the wind', the album they made after relocating to england and getting a few new members together. when demoniac were in new zealand their style was totally different.. it was only when the vocalist behemoth and guitarist heimdall (sam totman, a true fucking legend) moved to england and got herman li (guitar), matej setinc (drums) and diccon harper (bass) that they developed their more melodic style. the eagle spreads its wings, daggers and ice, demoniac spell, demons of the night, the fire and the wind... AWESOME SONGS! FUCKING AWESOME, to be precise. it's a shame the band split up though... but sam totman and herman li went on to form the power metal band DRAGONFORCE, which is FAR BETTER. dragonforce is my fave band, totman and li are fucking gods. has anyone heard them before? www.dragonforce.com HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!
im from south otago by the way, no metal scene down here but i living in christchurch all last year and theres some decent bands around.. anyone heard of Aphalon? pretty awesome black metal..

I have Prepare For War on tape somewhere. I also have the Head Like A Hole EP with the proto-Demoniac tracks on it.
New Zealand used to have a fucking good scene going in the early 1990s. Demise, Human, Malevolence, Daemon, Sinistrous Diabolus, and a few others whose names escape me now. Human and Malevolence are still going. 8 Foot Sativa is pretty much the biggest metal band in NZ now. Also not previously mentioned (I think) was Meatyard, a brilliant brutal death metal band. There are also hundreds of utterly shit faceless nu-metal clone bands (Blindspott anyone?), but they don't count.
