Obsolete Guitar Sound

The amp and guitar sound on Demanufacture and Obsolete are the same, the only difference is in the way it was recorded: guitars on Demanufacture recorded to digital and guitars on Obsolete went down to analog tape.

oh god same amp? it sounds so different.
I don't think is just something about digital/analog, I think is something about the engineer.
Actually even if obsolte is inferior to Demanufacture, it sounds so damn good! the guitar tone it's better I think.

It all comes down how you mic up the cabinet. With just a "small" movement of 5 cm into a different direction on the microphone, your recorded tone will change completely, especially with an SM57.

A small movement? 5 cm is not a small movement especially with an sm57. Even if you move it 1-2 cm away will change a lot the sound.
that tone is so different, is so scooped.
On demanufacture sounds really as a marshall JCM800, on obsolete uhm is so different even if it's the same amp.
I listened again to obsolete, well I rememberd a better tone.... Demanufacture guitarwise wins...

That's why I put those quotemarks on the word "small" ;)

It was just a notion, that you can easily have completely different sound from the identical setup depending on how you place the mic. There is no one sound you get from a given setup, not to mention the actual tweaking of the amp gain, EQ, presence etc.

I'm probably in the minority here, but as much as I love demanufacture's sound (and I do), I think Obsolete has an absolutlely amazing sound. A guitar tone I strive towards on occaision. I feel rhys fulber did an amazing job with it.

I even eventually started liking digimortal's sound, which I hated when I first heard it. It certainly beats the travesty of buzzsaw guitar that is the badly recorded krank on their latest. A real shame.

I dont know if its to late to throw this in but I worked a show on the digimortal tour and by then he was using pod pros through a mesa power amp (cant remember which one) and mesa wedges live

I'm glad someone else thinks the same way as I do!!

haha, yeah... I was listening to that album for ages, trying to work out what the hell they did to it. I was amazed to see christian using krank in the studio. did the producer know what he was doing with them?!
That and the mastering is lovely and clippy. That said, I think there are some great tracks on the new album. it just sucks that they're loosing thier quality control.

anyway, all this stuff has been said already a thousand times. I just miss the 'shine' of obsolete.

To me, I think Dino's guitar playing is the difference between Demanufacture and Obsolete! I think he started using one string riffs (on a 7 string) on the Obsolete album. The Demanufacture album is played with a six string tuned to drop B, I believe. The amp is the same, but was stolen in Pennsylvania?, during the Obsolete tour.:Puke: had to spit that out! My first Post!:kickass:
