It seems like being promised professional treatment is the kiss of death. Corporate will sometimes publish all these guidelines ... then do absolutely nothing when site-level management urinates all over the regs. Take Walmart. They're so awesome that employees could never need a union. In reality, they did whatever the hell they wanted to me. For instance, I was sternly lectured for demanding a chance to grab a jacket when they shifted me to a register next to this open gate in the middle of a wind/rain storm. Or they'd do crap like extending my 2-10 shift by until the manager came over the loudspeaker. Then there was the time they called me on my day off, left pissed off voicemail accusing me of cutting a shift, then told me
a) one of my supervisors added people despite forgetting to ask them
b) I needed to answer my phone more often
when I came in. In the end, I heard that there were major drainage issues resulting in bathrooms backing up and the breakroom flooding, got my performance review just before benefits/pay increase were due (and I took 10 days off for my wedding as disclosed during the interview), and was told to pack it in.
