Hey Thraxx, what do Raider fans think about Rob Ryan? rumor has it he will be the new Browns DC next season.
Another Rebuilding year for the Raiders! AUUUGGGGHHHH!!!!
Cable meets with Davis, Ryan on the way out
New Browns coach Eric Mangini will request permission from the Raiders to hire Rob Ryan as his defensive coordinator Thursday, a league source told The Chronicle on Wednesday.
The Raiders are expected to let Ryan leave early -- his contract doesn't expire until Tuesday, which is why Mangini needs their permission to interview and hire him immediately. Last year, Ryan sought to join Mangini with the Jets but Raiders owner Al Davis blocked the lateral move because Ryan had one more year on his deal.
Meanwhile, interim head coach Tom Cable finally had his sitdown meeting with Davis on Wednesday, their first such meeting since the season ended Dec. 28.
Cable hopes to become the full-time head coach. No word on if Davis offered him the job or told him he wasn't going to be kept on. One team official who spoke with Cable said the coach felt good about the meeting, so he apparently wasn't fired.
Right now, Cable looks like the only coach trying to stay in Oakland.
Running backs coach Tom Rathman accepted the same job with the 49ers on Wednesday, a Raiders source confirmed. Offensive coordinator Greg Knapp also took the same position with the Seahawks, as expected.
Special teams coordinator Brian Schneider was in Jacksonville on Wednesday interviewing for a position there. He's scheduled to interview in Seattle later this week.
Linebackers coach Don Martindale will get a chance to join Ryan in Cleveland if he likes, but he's also considered a candidate for the defensive coordinator job here.
Defensive backs coach Darren Perry is also expected to leave, according to a source close to the second-year assistant.
Wide receivers coach James Lofton is the only coach under contract with the Raiders next season.
Also, former director of football operations Mark Jackson was named a senior athletic director at USC, where he worked with Lane Kiffin before coming to the Raiders in 2007. Jackson and the Raiders parted ways by mutual agreement last month.
