I always thought Omnium Gatherum was a Bodom ripoff band like many others, so I kind of ignored them. But it's fine, we all make mistakes in life and that's how we become better people I think! I've been a huge fan since "The Red Shift" and the band's new album "Beyond", while not mindblowing, is a solid dose of Edge Of Sanity-styled (maybe with a hint of Dark Tranquillity) proggy death metal.

I was just about to say that I really like the melodic death metal sound when it's mixed with the low-growl style of vocals that you'd normally hear from traditional and/or br00tal death metal bands. (Garden of Shadows was another great example.) It took me a while to get into that kind of vocal because it did seem incongruous with the music - like it was floating over the top, superimposed, rather than truly integrated. But after a while I started to prefer it.

I've really liked this band for a really long time. I guess I've never picked up on the CoB vibe, can't wait to hear the new one.

Well I used to think they were a CoB clone and I shrugged them off, but that's not true at all and I was totally wrong. They sound nothing like CoB (imo anyways)!

As I said in Glenn's 2013 albums thread, this is very likely to end up as my album of the year. I've liked Omnium Gatherum for a while, but "New World Shadows" was a big step up from their back catalog, and this is an even bigger step up from that.

Definitely agree that it's an excellent band. I didn't get the CoB vibe either because the atmosphere and the keys they use in their music seem pretty different to me.

I do agree with Tycho too -- for a long time, I wanted to hear singing on music like this. But now I feel like the low growls really add another layer of complexity, like another instrument, to the music.

They did an excellent job with this album.
