one of my most recent mix / productions

Sick beans Joey! I can definitely see you looking for something further in your newest mixes and it sounds great! keep up the good work and hopefully ill get you to master my bands next EP

At first I was like "Are you serious? This sounds like shit, the kick is pumping and distorting everything".

Then I realised for some reason the site decided to play the song twice at the exact same time. Weird.

Sounds good, but the drums are quite buried. Some more level on the snare and some more brightness on the kick would be good. Are you still using GClip for the mastering, or have you moved on to more professional software (Ozone or FGX)? If you haven't, I'd suggest you do. Your mixes are always good and balanced, but despite being edited to shit they lack a lot of punch - the drums are just 'there', they don't pop out of your speakers. It's a little better now that you've moved away from Slate, but I think the mastering is just killing those transients. Would be cool to hear a song (even if its just a 30 sec sample of something that's already released) unmastered.

why do you hate TPAS

musically not production wise.
as for as production goes each one triumphs over the last.

dunno, just coming from Dream, TPAS just didnt meet my expectations.
(and the fact they dropped being a christian band when TPAS came out and then denied the fact of ever being a christian band really pissed me off. like they were using religion to get famous)

but Im over it now and tbh within this past week I have been listening to TPAS and starting to get used to it. its more of my gf pushing it on me.

im pretty sure Joey has never used gclip on the master, just on individual tracks? and I wanna say he has used Ozone for a couple years now

Using it on the master to clip the snare, or using it on the snare track is gonna produce the same effects. Maybe he's overdoing it.

idk and I'm not even sure I am right.

but it makes sense to me, I mean you have alot more control over what you are clipping if you only put it on what needs it.

I mean if I break my leg the doctor is not (hopefully) going to put a cast on my whole body, just the part that needs it, my leg.

you kinda get what I'm saying?

TPAS was excellent musically I thought, my favourite album from this kind of genre. The band has some great little riffs going on, even subtly sometimes. Especially when you compare it to the last AA! album where I don't think the band does anything but bar chord chugs the entire time.

WCAR are coming to Australia soon so I pumped TPAS at the gym yesterday and remembered how much I loved it. I still think its Joeys cleanest mix considering all the elements he had to incorporate into it.

This new song is good too man, congrats!

i dont really agree with you on a lot of points
but most of all i strongly disagree about the snare. the snare is the loudest thing in the mix, and it definitely pops out over here...

the kick is buried on purpose. go see them live. he's not a hard kicker. plus its really annoying when the kick is on top of the mix, rather than being a part of the music. i really felt like the riffs and the vocals were driving the songs so i tried to blend the kick in really well. maybe i went to far i can agree a little there, but it still works for a demo (the song is actually just a demo). im pretty much over making bands sound opposite to what they would sound like live. so im trying to be more realistic about the whole thing to a certain degree (not with everyone, but as where i see fit).

i dont use gclip on mastering. i use ozone. and some other waves plugins. judging from what you had said about the distortion, something makes me suspect you still didnt hear the song properly.

Very good job man! I love this mix, and the band myself. Drums sound real good, and I love clean vocals.
