both sound pretty good in their own way ImO

The impulses sound the goods if your after a more authentic "mainstream" sound. The std POD track is ok too though. Not as IYF as the impulses, a bit thinner, but workable.

What impulses did you use?

recording chain was:
custommade les paul with shadow pus --> bad monkey --> alesis IO 26 --> cubase

pod with stock cabs: criminal amp (5150) + treadplate cab, 4 tracks (100% left, 80% left, 80% right, 100% right)
pod with impulses: criminal amp (5150) , 4 tracks (100% left, 80% left, 80% right, 100% right) + guitarhack impulse (between 0, jj louder settings) for the 80% (left and right) and engl pro cab impulse with higher presence for both tracks with 100% (left and right)

everything mastered with ozone; drums with ez drummer dfh and extra samples for kick and snare with drumagog.
