oooh DragonCon has metal!

I got a revised email: Vainglory is no longer scheduled for Thursday and will probably perform on the same night (same ballroom) as TTD. Judging from the rest of the band roster, I'd speculate Friday night.

Do you know when the final schedule will be released? If Stolen Babies plays that night, I will be there.

Quickest way to have metal killed forever at Dragon*Con is to flood the office with email. Trust me, I know.

But if you feel you have to send an email, be sure and send some and piss off Pat H. and Brenda Tackett. Rock the fuck on.

When I appraoched Pat with the idea he seemed to have liked it sayimnng "that is brillant" and "why had I never thought of that". So someone was listening.

Hey, we did what we could sorry. Actually we did have several bands and labels contacting us for spots, Talked to a few who were much bigger names. But we were most comfortible with this. Besides wanted a TRUE heavy metal band and that is what we have with Twisted Tower Dire.

Nah I understand, just had my hopes up until Raggi crushed them ;p It's cool.

And Overlorde is true metal =d

And I'm glad its not metalcore (would somebody please give a better term than core, because I hate it too, but we all know what we mean when we say it).

When I was a kid if it wasn't bald and from NY (Agnostic Front, Murphy's Law) then it wasn't hardcore. Of course there was Minor Theat too. Nowadays I'm just confused.
I wonder if this is the first time those three names ever came up in this forum. Well, back to work. Planning for D*C seems to keep us busy here. So I hope you all dig it.

It's interesting that we are bring in the bands but it is this forum were we found out what is going on.
The bands are waiting for us to bring them some news. But we are all glad to hear that the two bands are back on the same night as originally told to us. Now it would only be great to get Saturday or Sundy. But hey, as long as they are together it should make for a good show. And the bands have a few surprises in store as well. Provided all goes well.

Pellaz is speaking the truth on that one. If you do send an e-mail, I would suggest waiting until after the event (they are backlogged with pre-con junk right now) and be cool about it.

Just to specifically clarify (somehow those 2 words together don't sound earthy enough ha ha)...

Exploding Ned's Tunes will be at Dragon Con setting up with 2 booths of merchandise. The main difference between this setup and the one you normally see me with at PP is that I will also bring along the rock, psychedelic, blues and progressive titles. So I will have all the metal and shirts there as well, IOW everything I normally carry. Jeremy and Jamie and their Heaven and Hell Records will have a booth setup next to me, and they are the ones doing all the legwork to bring some serious metal into Dragon Con... for which they should be highly praised. In the past I have heard metal isn't much of a draw at DC, but I agree with H&HR that metal is a natural thing for a festival like DC. So hopefully many of you will attend the Twisted Tower Dire and Vainglory concerts there, and also stop by the Exploding Ned's and Heaven & Hell Records booths. As always you will see Exploding Ned's at PP, but just wanted to mention another gig to find Exploding goods and invite everyone out to DC. It should be a blast.

I for one am very happy to see DragonCon getting on board with the METAL, especially with a band as good as Twisted Tower Dire (love their new singer, by the way). I've skipped the past several DCons because I just wasn't interested in seeing the same morose goth bands year after year, but I am definitely on board this year!

Kudos to Heaven & Hell for bringing the METAL this year! Let's start moving the focus from pouting and eyeliner to swords and axes!

Twisted Tower Dire are killer trad. metal and I'd love to be able to see 'em. Hopefully I can catch them at their Chicago show coming up. If any of you can track down their album Isle of Hydra, get it, it blows Crest away, although Crest is a good album in it's own right. Overlorde, Vainglory, Hallow's Eve (Lethal Tendencieeeeeeeeeees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Nice! Would love to be able to go but, gotta save for the Oct. trip to Atlanta.

You'll need an awful lot of people. Actually, I could do without the pouting myself, which is cool since most of my friends' bands aren't pouters anyway.

I would like to add at this time that there is a lot more to DragonCon than bands. This year there are a lot of cool non-musical guests and for people who like vampire and horror stuff, I run what I think is a good programming track.

Our thoughts were that perhaps metal (if done presented correctly) could work well. After all D*C is very closely fantasy and sci-fi related. Understanding that D*C is much more than Fantasy and sci-fi, it still waves that banner high. So what better than a metal band or any music for that matter that sings about dungeon and dragons type themes. Sounds to me like it would be obvious.
I do not recall Sisters of Mercy or Bauhaus ever writing a song based on Moorecock or a hobbit. However since the convention is a “pop-culture” goth groups work. Still there are several Manowar t shirts, black metal fans, and others who may not necessarily care for the disco in black PVC group. But may only be there cause it is the only thing going on.
Personally I look forward to seeing Bella Morte and stolen Babies. So hopefully it is not at the same time as TTD/
I heard Stolen Babies referred to a s a metal band, they’re not by far. Jeez, has loose will the term metal become? Rhetorical question (don‘t have time to discuss).

Which "morose" goth bands are you referring to? Be specific and cite examples.

Meanwhile.....I think it's funny that people will judge whether to plunk down $70+ for a Dragon*Con membership based on which bands are playing (or not playing).

Dragon*Con is not, and never has been, a musical festival. When it was started, the Dragon*Con Board included a musical element (Michael Moorcock, and Eric Bloom of BOC backed by a decent local band), and happily that tradition has continued...but from an overall standpoint for most of the c. 30,000 attendees, music is very much a secondary part of the event.

That being said, it is possible for a band to sell 1,000 copies of a CD or EP at Dragon*Con...hell, it happened last year. But really, musical performances really are just one small cog in an astonishingly wide, diverse convention machine.

Is that our ProgPower forum friends Overlorde?!!!

Yep that's us. Well, Kong is attending for a MEET & GREET since he now lives nearby in South Carolina.

BTW, is anyone interested in picking up a vinyl gatefold copy of Overlorde's RETURN OF THE SNOW GIANT at Dragon Con? If so leave a post here so HEAVEN AND HELL RECORDS knows to order some.

I'd definitely buy one

Sisters of Mercy never wrote anything fantasy related, but Bauhaus wrote "Hollow Hills," which is about the faerie beliefs in England. Keep in mind, there is more to fantasy than "epic fantasy," there are also ghost stories, supernatural horror and dark fantasy, and a lot of gothic rock bands draw from that well. For that matter, Cruxshadows' songs are heavily steeped in Greek mythology (regardless what one feels about the band). That being said, I do agree that metal potentially has a place at Dragon*Con, based on the thematic references to epic fantasy (and I told the guy who books bands as much). Ultimately, it will all depend on the turn-out, I think. So to anyone thinking about "writing to the office," it would be more effective to just show up at the metal sets instead. Vote with your presence in the audience.

But Paul C. is 100% right...the bands are just a one part of the event, and many attendees don't even pay attention to them.

I heard Stolen Babies referred to as a metal band, they’re not by far. Jeez, has loose will the term metal become? Rhetorical question

It's about as loose and misunderstood as the term "goth" is. But Stolen Babies will be the first to admit that they are not a metal band...they really don't know how to classify themselves (me neither).

Well, the Cruxshadows for one. But I guess they're the house band. At least Voltron...sorry, Voltaire has a sense of humor.

Look, I'll be a 1-day attendee this year. I'm just not into the whole sci-fi/fantasy thing enough to buy a full pass. I will, however, drop my hard-earned on a day pass if it means a night of metal.

Cruxshadows a 'morose' goth band? Uh, not in any universe I'm aware of. Certainly not nowadays.

At least Voltron...sorry, Voltaire has a sense of humor.

He's a consummate performer, even solo.
His full band performance, if it matches their last time (5? 6 years ago?), should be terrific.
That year, The Misfits played D*C, but in the words of my roommate Tim, "Voltaire was better than The Misfits!" --This was coming from someone who was leaving with Misfits to go on tour with them as a tech the following day!

Buy a Saturday badge, then. That's the night Vainglory and TDD are performing. Get there early enough on Saturday morning to watch the parade. 1400+ participants and 42+ vehicles, as of this morning. :)
