"Open-Mindedness," Virtue...or Vice?

Sometimes a different point of view is neccessary to see the whole more clearly. Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, in the end they all talk about basically the same thing, using different words, symbols, characters, etc.

I don't know but i don't agree with the guy here. I know the human being has always looked for a higher force to beleive in, even in the pre-historic era humans beleive in something but if you look on the core of each religion you'll find that they have crutial differences (that was my point earlier) and way of doing things even though the esence is pretty much the same ''the quest for a higher being to beleive in''

Lina, I may have pointed out the different constructions of "open-minded" at work here, but your highlighting of the relativistic stance of much of what passes for "open-mindedness" is key.

Flower- your point being? can you explain how opeth aren't so fond on their knowledge of the music that they are making? or how they can't express the music with the genre that they are incorporating within the metal shell of their music?

i hope i'm not being incoherent

I can't read all of this now. But I'll just state my personal impression...

It sounds like is just basically trying to justify himself and his beliefs. It's a far stretch to say that open-mindedness can be so harmful, but with a Christian belief, he probably feels that open-mindedness will simply make a person less likely to belief in Christianity - something he'd rather not see.

And if he's going by Christian doctrine, he probably thinks that all the open-minded people who gave up on Christ are going to be damned for all eternity. We wouldn't want to see that; would we? ;)

As it pertains to religion, open-mindedness is a necessity - at least if place value in the concept of civilization.

To explain, nearly everyone of any faith feels that his/her particular view is "the truth" (obviously) and that all others hold faith in a "false truth". By itself, this may not cause problems.

HOWEVER, when you have millions who act on these feelings, thinking that they're "rightous" & all others are "wrong" or "evil" or "infidels", etc. ad naseum, and begin to discriminate, wage terror/war/murder, etc., civility & "the common good" suffers a major blow.

One must have the mental maturity & emotional fortitude to, at least, ponder the fact his faith/religions may, in fact, be wrong.

And, of course, that does not mean to engage in "mass philosophical consumerism" or anything of that nature.
Not in the least, actually.

When it comes to music, it's all completely subjective. One man's definition of "innovation within the metal scene" can be COMPLETELY different than anyone else's view.
