My comparison to Isis was not based on musical complexity.I agree with you in part, but Isis music isn't as intricate to play as Opeth's, so that might have something to do with it?
Having seen Opeth a half dozen times prior to seeing Isis, I had been under the impression that Opeth's shows lacked intensity because the constant rising and falling nature of the music never allowed the shows to build and sustain a powerful energy. Consequently, I assumed an Isis show would suffer the same fate. However, Isis was amazing live... one of the best shows I've ever seen.
As for musical complexity being the issue, I don't think it is. Opeth's music is complex in the sense that the songs are long and have a great number of passages. However, it's not complex in the sense that what they're individually doing as musicians is incredibly intricate. There are any number of bands whose music is more difficult to execute, who perform with a greater energy.
