PART 5: CONFIGURING YOUR ROUTER/OPENING PORT 2234

addendum: newer slsk clients choose a random port at start-up. if you need to forward a port, it would be best to set a static port via slsk by clicking options|general options and editing the listening port field. slsk v153 and older use port 2234 and the listening port cannot be altered. we use 2234 in our instructions below and elsewhere, however, if your client is listening on a different port, obviously you'll want to substitute our references to 2234 with whatever is relevant to you.

1. get the ip address of the machine you want to use slsk on.
- windows 9x/me: start-->run. type winipcfg into the run box and click ok.
- win nt/2k/xp/2k3: start-->run. type cmd and click ok. at the prompt, type ipconfig.
- make a note of the GATEWAY address and the IP ADDRESS. a lot of people seem to be mixing these up. don't mix them up!

2. open the router's web-based front-end.
- open internet explorer and type the GATEWAY address into the addressbar. hit enter.
- you'll probably be prompted for a username/password. try "admin" in the username with a blank password. if that fails, try "admin" as the password with a blank username. if that fails, try "admin" as both the username and password. if that fails, check your router's manual or just keep guessing until your fingers die.

3. click where it says "ports" or "forwarding" or "advanced" or "virtual server." where it's asking for port numbers, enter 2234 in both the start and end boxes. parallel to where you type this, there should be a place to type an ip address or to chose one from a list. chose the IP ADDRESS that you got from step 1. NOT THE GATEWAY ADDRESS. sometimes you'll need to put a check mark or something in an "enable" box. if you see anything like that, check it.

4. routers sometimes need to be reset after configuration. if you're still having trouble, try resetting it.

Hopefully this helps
