Opeth/Maudlin thread again...

Thanks Paul, I was wondering where everyone was starting to pour from into that thread. Gee, I'm sure the people here would 'address' the problem very well, seeing as the only thing that can be achieved by inviting Maudlin fans into a generally anti-Maudlin conversation can only lead to the happiest of outcomes, right?

On Opeth's behalf, when the matter was first raised, I got pretty ticked off that he seemed to dismiss Opeth's style of composition in such a sarcastic manner, almost as if implying that Maudlin's music was in some way better , figure that yeah. I remember members of the band later entering the original thread then one of them making a great big sweeping generalisation and calling all Opeth fans, 'morons' or 'idiots', or somesuch derogatory term... one im sure alot of you see fitting to apply by yourselves, nonetheless quite childish and hardly helped to diffuse the situation initially.

If I recall correctly (and I'm quite sure I do), this whole issue was mostly a product of the fact that members of motw/kd were tired of the tendency for music critics to immediately draw upon comparisons between Opeth and every other band in the realm of "metal" who was producing music that, for lack of a better description, incorporated a mixture of light and heavy elements and showed any sort of dynamic range, whether or not the band being compared actually had much to do with Opeth's style of music. I didn't ever think of it as a derogatory comment at all, but as a comment that these comparisons aren't always all that applicable and that many music critics take the easy way out.

As far as the "ignorance" of Opeth fans goes, I think it's more of an "e-rivalry" done mostly in jest, though perhaps not a little unrelated to the way that some people who frequent the Opeth board misunderstand comments like the one in question and turn it into a personal attack on themselves instead of one musician's opinion of the music scene that he is actually a part of. I don't personally care whether Toby likes Opeth or not - I still enjoy their music, as well as Kayo Dot's - nor do I take offense at the expression of a personal opinion when it happens to be in conflict with my own.

Variously referred to as "Nipplegate" and the "bra-ha-ha," the one-second Super Bowl flashing continued to cause reverberations Tuesday night.

MTV boss Tom Freston, whose network produced the halftime show, bitterly complained about being "punk'd" by Janet Jackson, and Federal Communications Commission chief Michael Powell said the entire show angered him.

"I think everybody's focusing on the finale, but a lot of what we've heard in terms of complaints and the breadth of the investigation is a little broader than just that incident," Powell said on ABC's "Good Morning America. "I personally was offended by the entire production."

Heart in Pieces: There isn't a problem, in reality. A lot of people made a big deal out of something Toby said in an interview and took things too seriously, sort of inventing a "rivalry" between the two bands. It just goes to show that you can't trust everything you see on the internet.
