Opeth, Vintersorg, and Gentle Giant

I know where the GG singer lives...did you know that the owner of the Roadrunner records is the gentle giant guitarist...I think.

Gentle Giant... In my top 5 bands of all time. Last year I bought the DVD "Giant on the Box", featuring an in-studio concert for the German televison, filmed in Belgium in front of a studio audience... What is there to say? The best assembly of musicians ever to have formed a band. For Christ's sake, every guy in that band plays at least 4 different instruments, sometimes within one song!

Personnaly I love all of their albums... yes, even Giant for a Day and Civilian. They are not my favorites, my favorite period going from Octopus to Interview (Playing the Fool is one of my all-time favorite live albums, along with Exit Stage Left and A Show of Hands by Rush).

Opeth, a band in a category all its own, a rare occurrence these days. Expert songwriting skills, captivating songs, beauty and brutality intertwined. Intense, honest metal music. As a guitarist myself, I must admit they have had an influence on my songwriting (visit my band's website, where we posted samples of our songs at www.oddyssey-web.com. We are DEFINITELY not as heavy nor as good, but feel free to listen and comment). Hell, I even had the elaborte "O" tattooed, as it represents to me musical excellency and integrity.

Vintersorg, well I only own and know 1 album, "Cosmic Genesis", and it is a great album, but not great enough to be curious and check their other albums out. I will soon enough, though.

Cheers !

Gentle Giant singer, actually, Derek Shulman. If you knew the amount of excellent bands this guy has signed over the years... Tears for Fears, Dream Theater, Cinderella, Pantera, Slipknot... there are so many! He was previously involved with Road Runner Records, but now has a label of his own, DRT Entertainment.

Facinating info, people!

It's good to see apreciation for GG. They aren't exactily dark and heavy.
I only have their "esintials" (GG-FH and PTF). But I love them so much, so I will likely get the rest soon.

Vintersorg sounds like the guy from Dexy's Midnight Runners. One out of five or so of his songs seems to be real good though.
I'm all for singing about Johannes Kepler, and Galilleo.
