I may be opening a music shop in Ft. Worth. My uncle's with some girl who's got $$$ and she thinks she wants to buy some storefronts and let me have one to open a music shop with... so, I figure if I'm gonna do that, then I'll get some designer/boutique kind of gear to put in there.

Just wondering if anyone might have some kind of helpful advice or criticism's concerning the subject matter... words of warning or whatever. It's not a definite thing, but, it is certainly being considered.

One problem you'll have to look at is with Boutique gear. There isn't a huge market for it when compared to the normal consumer items available. Due to the price. Don't get me wrong, I'd love some nice Manley gear and Neve etc. But the price is beyond most hobbiest and semi pro's. You would probaly still need to stock more lower down the price bracket items too. You need to pay the bills at the end of the day :)

I had a project recently where we had to set up a business with a business plan etc. The whole nice yards. Really made me realise very quickly starting and running a business ain't easy.

That's me two cents. Hope it mite help a little....

It's times like this where you wish you could take after 'the dude' :)

retail sucks these days in almost any small store. id stay away. im in specialty retail and i cant wait to get out. people come in and grill you and then buy it off ebay or wherever they can get it the cheapest. service just isnt as important to most people because the majority of people are tight on cash to say the least. i would think twice about retail. just get one of the spots and do a studio  . or a metal club. provide a service people cant buy online or through the mail. thats what i would consider.

I thought I'd consider taking it online, as well as trying to get some other services going like simple PA rentals and shit... who knows... aside from that, if I stocked up Diezel and Matamp gear or something... I guess I could pull off kind of what that Rock solid guy's got going... soundclips and all.

I would highly discourage it. It's tough enough for those who have no storefront or overhead to speak of to stay in business selling online, but having the overhead of a front, unless you have something other than the boutique gear as income, is in my opinion an recipe for failure.

If you really want to do it, you need to start putting some numbers and expectation calculations on paper to see if it's even remotely possible. My guess is, once you do that, you'll do something else, like open a silk flower store. :goggly:

Many boutique brands will not allow you to sell without a storefront, but then this goes back to my last post.
