Since tonight is my mom's 50th birthday and my girlfriend left me at home all alone as they decided to throw a womens-only party, I had a hard time coming up with an idea for how I should spend a saturday night alone.

Option a; I could sit home and fiddle with my guitar, polish some of my mixes(they sure need it!) and browse the web.

Or option b; I read somewhere that there's a small metal show going to take place in my city tonight and I could go see it.

I went for option b...

Now I was a little hesitant to go see the concert because it was going to take place at the local youth club. That means no alcohol, drugs or bitches... Ok I'm not really into drugs... and I've allready got a girlfriend so I guess I'm no longer into bitches either...
I've just recently move back to this city and when I left a couple of years ago the metal scene was really, how should I put it, not there at all.

To my surprise, the place was packed(200 - 300) with kids, all dresse in black and with long hair, leather and nails. I guess most of them was around 15-16 years old, so I got quite a few funny looks when I walked through the doors.
So after my first positive shock(seeing all those little metalheads) I was quickly slapped in the face with another... nasty shock.
The sound was beyound horrible! I dare say that not one element in the mix was anywhere near listenable.
So I had a dilemma... should I go or should I stay?

I decided that no matter how much I love metal, this was simply too much for my poor ears. So when I was about to leave, this guy walks over to me and asks me if I would mind taking a look at the mixer. It turned out that this was a guy I used to work with a couple of years ago and he and his band had a rehersal room in the same building as my band a while before that, so he allready knew that I'm into mixing live bands and doing some studio work.
I agreed to "take a look" at the mixer and see if I could help him with the sound a little, but I got carried away and immediately changed the whole mix into something(still pretty rough and nasty) much better.

I havent done any livework since desember so I had a helluva good time behind that mixer desk and before knew it the show was over. It was six bands, just kids really, but one band in particular was actually really good. They played a progressive kind of heavy metal that reminded me a bit of Dream theater or Symphony X, but with a bit more trash metal feel to it. Everyone in the band played really well except for the singer, but considering that he's only 16 years old he did a really good job too.
Anyway, when the gig was over the club manager asked me to do future livejobs there and even though it wont pay much at all I said yes without a second thought.
Just wanted to share this with you guys:)

Here's different situation. When someone on local gig asks the band if they need help with sound they would say something like: "And what do you know about it?"

sounds awesome! cool story, it makes me happy to know that there are young kids out there making metal! starting off on the right foot. i would love to hear some of the bands, did u snag a demo (or an autograph ;) ) from one of the bands?

I saw a show like that, too last friday.
3 bands, all pretty young, also at the local youth-club. the second band was pretty good actually (regarding they were all around 16 or something) they had their first gig that day, only playing covers (CoB, Amon Amarth, Satyricon, Kreator, Slayer....).
had to help the singer with the mic a little lol we all had a hard time hearing him when he screamed into the side of the mic, so I just went on stage and adjusted the mic-placement while he was singing :) worked better after that.

then there was the guitarrist of the 3rd band.... 2 of those guys where trying to get a good sound out of a Boss GT8 and a Marshall Valvestate and just didnt manage..... that guitar sounded A LOT bassier than the bass... just bad! I decided to have a look at the amp to see if I could help them a little (they were trying to adjust the GT8 all the time)... what did I see? treble: about 3/4, mids: 0 (!), bass: maximum WTF??? took about 3 seconds to fix his problem....
