Ozric Tentacles (psychedelic trip-rock?)

Nope. I need to dig up the VHS tape of a show I got of theirs...around 92-93'. I can't even remember what it's called at the moment, haven't watched it in 10 years or so. It's hazy/grainy quality makes it hard to watch, though.

Damn I HATE correcting people on this.

PSYCHEDELIC AND PROGRESSIVE ARE COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! PROGRESSIVE IS TRIPPY AND STUFF LIKE TMV AND PINK FLOYD. Psychedelic is like a louder and more upbeat version of Blues, like some of Cream and a lot of Hendrix.

I just get so tired of reading this everywhere.

"Pink Floyd is so Psychedelic"

If you want some Psychedelic here are some bands for you.

Cream
The Jimi Hendrix Experience
The Grateful Dead
Iron Butterfly

If you want Progressive or Experimental

The Mars Volta
Pink Floyd
At The Drive-In

I know the meaning of the word Psychedelic is drug induced but that doesn't mean its the trippy music. Psychedelic started with Hippies and as you hopefully know a lot of Hippies did drugs which is where Psychedelic came from as a music style.

Damn I hate correcting people who think they are right when they are quite factualy incorrect about it.
Psychedelic music & Progressive rock are not two entirely different things. If you take Pink Floyd they actually started out as a Psychedelic pop group with Syd Barrett & gradually transformed their sound firstly incorporating heavier sound with more feedback alongside a more ambient sound which developed into what we call Space rock. They later incorporated a more symphonic sound with jazz influences (Atomic Heart Mother)as their take on Progressive rock. They developed their sound further as they went through the 70's & beyond.
Psychedelic rock was actually a pre-cursor to Progressive rock. Many groups actually span both genres.Take Family - who were influencial on both Genesis,Yes & King Crimson etc. They were described as Psychedelic but were also proto-progressive - many of the members went on to feature in later Progressive Groups.
Psychedelia was music that featured alot of distortion (fuzzy guitar sounds) but also featured other experimental & world (Asian) sounds. It was not always loud.If it sounded like the music was made under a drug induced altered mind state/experimental it was called Psychedelic - this included mellower sounds.
The Greatful Dead although a Psychedelic group were part of the American West Coast branch which differed from the British form of Psychedelia which featured more pop bias.In Britain Freak Beat was a developement that bridged both Psychedelia & Progressive Rock.Freak Beat group Tomorrow featured Steve Howe later of Yes after he left proto-prog group Bodast.
Iron Butterfly,Hendrix & Cream were part of the heavy blues re-vival movement, although also part of the Psychedelic movement they were also proto-Metal & proto-Progressive rock(Heavy Prog)
At the Drive In are definately not Prog rock - they are a post-hardcore (punk) group, although perhaps more of the experimental end.As you know the Mars Volta feature two of the members & still retain some of their post-hardcore sounds occasionally along with other jazz, heavy rock, prog & psych noodlings - which result in their form of Prog.
The main exponants of Prog are Yes,Genesis,ELP,King Crimson & Jethro Tull.Rush were not part of the early scene.

The songs on their myspace dont do them justice. I just got Pyramidion and Its some brilliant stuff. Relaxing and very far out there. Parts of their songs remind me of the psychedelic days of Porcupine Tree even.

Anyone heard of em...love em'?

Yes I think they started out as more of a British Rave troop (they actually go back as far as 1983).They are part of the revival of the hippy movement that was part of the rave scene at that time. They also use electronica/Techno,Dub,Trance & Ambient Techno as part of their mix.Only difference is they add Psychedelic & even Prog guitars & proper percussion instruments/drums as well as sampled percussion to their mix.Alot of their former members have actually gone on to join true electonica & new age(electronic) groups.
A main influence is Steve Hillage & Gong which explains some of their Psych & Eastern sounding leanings as well as the electronic sounds which feature on mainy Hillage recordings.
They have been grouped in with Neo-prog & recently alternative sub-genre New Prog (Porcupine Tree ,Muse). They are part of neither - they are a one off really.
Comment - Not so keen on some of their dance & dub work ,but occastionally produce some outstanding music. They never seem to keep to one form of music on their albums which makes it a little irritating if you don't like experimental dance or alternatively Psych/prog.They make you appreciate other genres if you a dragged in though.

yeah. you showed me this band, fuckin' awesome. the musicians are very good.

I was pretty impressed with OT when I first heard them, but after a while I began to realise that the vast majority of their music sounds basically the same.

They're a lot of fun for a straight-up jam band, but I could not possibly call them "great" just because of how utterly formulaic they are, and because I find very little of their music memorable.

"Pink Floyd is so Psychedelic"

The Syd Barrett era is definitely psychedelic rock.

By the way, I'm pretty sure that V5 is the biggest Ozrics fan ever. I like what I've heard by them as well.

I could not possibly call them "great" just because of how utterly tformulaic hey are

If you don't mind my asking, how exactly are they formulaic? Every song that I've heard seems to have its own identity and unique characteristics, and the albums are pretty varied from my experience with the few that I've heard.

Okay... I'm not sure how a band that basically fills most of their songs with largely unmelodic jamming can be giving a unique identity to each of those songs. I really don't see what makes you think that. Sure, they may vary the overall tone a bit from album to album, and they do have a few easily recognisable songs, but I think you'd have to be extraordinarily familiar with their discog before you could pick a song at random from it and go, "Oh, that's from this album."

I can usually memorize most of a song on just one or two listens through, and if I had this type of problem with Ozric Tentacles, I definitely wouldn't listen to black metal or various other types of music that you generally seem to have the same types of complaints about.

They aren't formulaic, since the musical approach on individual pieces is incredibly varied and definitely differs not only by album, but also on the individual tracks themselves. There's no specific formula to their music, even if you in particular have a hard time distinguishing the tracks.

For those of you that haven't seen this, Brandi Wynne (Ed's wife, keyboardist) posted some info about the NEW Ozrics album on their board a few weeks ago:

Hello All!

Love and greetings from Colourful Colorado !

. . . I know, I know . . . sorry for disappearing off into the ether again. :-[
Hopefully this time we won't ever do it again. It's been an action packed couple of months, . . . So much so I'm actually having trouble remembering what happened, sort of feels a bit like we just woke up one morning in Fort Collins ! Good thing though, I have to say, this place rocks! We're absolutely loving it. It snows and then four hours later your out in the sun drinking tea in a T-shirt.
It's really strange coming back to America for me, it almost feels as foreign to me as it does to the boys everyone hears my accent and assumes I'm British, . . .seems really funny when people ask me how I like living in America. I guess I did just spend the last third of my life in the UK though, it all went so fast, I never noticed I was there for so long. Bloody well miss ulot over there though. :'(
Miss our spacebass too. :'( (love ya' vin. xxx)

So, plans, plans, plans, . . . plans be constantly pushed back at the moment to coincide with the release of . . . yes, it really is the real title, the "Yum Yum Tree". Which is actual a phrase Ed has played with for years, which is why it really made us laugh, when we saw the "Yum Yum Tree" Chinese restaurant near our old place. Apparently there is a few of them though. Too funny Orpheus that you say "yum yum tree makes me think of a kid's program featuring the kind of odd looking mutants you get on most bbc shows nowadays" . . . tee hee hee, ;)
ah, that's great. . . ah, just wait 'till you see the cover!! ;D I think I'll be laughing about that all day. ;D Obviously it's title suits it then. ;)
The only trouble is, you might have to wait a while to see the whole cover. Yum Yum is scheduled for release on April 21st in the UK and three weeks later on May 5th in the US. Consequently our tour we've been planing for April now has to be pushed back to June-July. :(
In the meantime though, we will be doing our best to organize some regular, once a month i~sh gigs in the Colorado area. Also we're hard at work sort of cleaning out the attic of the studio
so to speak. Gathering all the unheard and unreleased goodies to put together for the new re-masters and packages for the old albums. Snapper and I have plans to make them all look
as nice as the new Jurassic package, with sort of similar bonus discs. ... Also, if you keep an eye on the shop, Ozric Tshirts should be surfacing sometime in the next week. I've been
working on a lot of designs, some old classics, some totally new, some new ones made from old classics. . . they are on they're way though, and this time once they do surface they might actually stick around for a while. Lastly, since Vin is currently stuck over there, and Ollie is currently stuck on the east coast, and it'll be a few months before everyone can be in one place,
Ed and I have been working on Nodensy things . . . (more on that to come), and new live tracks for ozric gigs.
Ollie's coming out on tuesday and we're playing at Cervantes Saturday the 21st. We want them to invite us back so please help us get people out to the show, if anyone feels like putting out the word on forums and my space and facebook and such we'd really appreciate the support!
Anyway, I'll stop gibbering on because I'm going to keep in touch now. If you have questions, I'll actually be here to answer them, and so will Ed, and Ollie and I think Joie's even going to visit soon too. He's finally decided to use the internet once and a while ! ;D
We look forward to serving you better and more frequently with all the information and updates you need, (or at least all the information and updates we have),
. . . and we hope you will enjoy the fruits of the yum yum tree! ;)

love & light ~ b x x

Can't wait. Hopefully they play some Canadian shows.
