Paul Di' Anno....Beyond the Maiden

I like Paul Di' Anno, hes cool and i prefer his versions of the early Maiden stuff over Bruce to this day.

Anyway recently my friend sent me a copy of a cd (which yes, i will buy) called 'Beyond The Maiden' i really like it and there are a few covers of older songs i know already like 'Living in America' etc.

But what i cant get my head around why he has coverd practically the whole of Fastways 'Bad Bad Girls' album ??? Is there a story to this ?? Just seems like a very strange thing.

Was really weird every other song being from that Fastway album (which i happen to really like also lol)

Would certainly appreciate any info if anyone has any on this cd and i would also recommend it if you havent heard it.

Totally agree with you there Valanx, those first two Maiden albums featuring Di' Anno are well cool!! He gave Maiden a punky feel which is what they needed at the time.

I met him before a Maiden gig, he was pissed out of his head!! We thought, how is he gonna do the show! But two hours later he was on stage, and to this day it's one of my all time gigs, they played a blinder!

I also remember when Bruce joined the band, a music mag asked Di'Anno what his thoughts were on it! His answer was "Rule 7- No Poofters"

Sorry mate! To get back to your question it does seem strange he should cover so many Fastway tracks, I'm afraid I can't give you the info, but thought I could share those two Di'Anno moments with you

I know what you mean about the punky feel, those first two records have such a vibe. And thats a great story mate, sounds like the type of tales you hear about Bon Scott. Must of been a very memorable performance, and cool that you got to meet him as well !

I agree here Valanx, In fact the latest songs from Maiden now, the lyrics are not my taste and listening to Bruce, his voice doesnt sound that driven and passionate as on Number of the Beast .. it sounds so dull..I think I overrated him, but I think alot do that...just my freedom of speech..!

well... Paul Di'Anno was pretty good in the early records, but after that, Maiden is so different that it's hard to compare them. Anyway, I kind a like Bruce's voice, but it's also very annoying at the same time. It's like he is singing with the same voice all the time, you know. Well, of course he has the same voice, but.... Judas Priest's Heavy Metal, Victim of Changes, Riding on the Wind. Rob sings them all in a very different way. Bruce never does that. That and the same rhythm in every songs makes some people to think that when they've heard one Maiden song, they've heard them all I understand them perfectly. IMO Bruce sounds a bit like Lemmy.

Hallo Redman, Bruce his voice is ok, no doubt about that and some songs like brave new world are brilliant..., but the turning came for me on the Life after dead album... the guitar parts from the gitarists were brilliant, but his voice sounded not like I wanted it to sound... it was in a hurry..I sometimes thought he cant get after the speed of the music (breath taking in beteween)..so it sounded like a rushing job, I felt no feeling... but of course there are other people who really did like that album.. and thats good, different kind of tastes isnt it? The early stuff from Maiden I appreciate alot and a few songs after that early stuf..but I am glad that there is a band Like Iron Maiden..after all..

It was supposedly limited to 150 copies and people were buying it on ebay for £30+ but I found this link http://www.diannostore.com/ and bought one through PAYPAL. I was expecting an email to say I'd been refunded as they were all gone but bugger me, I got one! I don't know if there are still any available but the link is still 'live' but you can only buy 1 copy. I can recommend it.

Ermmmmm, no, from the tales my work colleagues recount of their dealings with him, he's actually a knob-end.
It would be wrong of me to post those tales, because I have no way of saying that they are true, but I've had it from several un-related sources, without prompting, that he is not a very nice person at all.

Buuuuuut, music-wise, that early Maiden stuff kicked arse, I still love it today. Might even try and get hold of that re-recorded stuff, got to be worth a punt!

hmm thats a shame in a way, from interviews etc. he always seemed pretty cool about things, even what happened with maiden! Id love to hear those tales you mentioned but understand why you wouldnt want to post them.

Still i guess he has had a lot of problems since those early maiden era days!

I guess in some ways perhaps being in Iron Maiden (starting out) that went on to become such a huge phenomenon (especially in the 80s) without you as a part of them, i think id be a bit of a knob end too!

Talk about gutted !! how must he have felt every time Maiden released a multi platinum album that spawned all those world wide sell out tours... proper guttage!

He may come across a knob but he loves what he does! I saw him at Bradford Penningtons in front of about 100 people (not too dissimilar to Saxon) and despite his obvious dissappointment he did the gig like a pro. I don't doubt Maiden wouldn't have been as successful if he'd stayed but I still prefer the first 2 albums. I'm due to see the Dickinson vesion of IM in December but he'll never be able to do justice to Phantom,Sanctuary,Running Free etc in my eyes.

Yep, I'd say a lot of the stories revolve around having a large chip on his shoulder, but who wouldn't have? Also, I think his love of the sauce and "embellishing" stories haven't done him any favours, nor has turning up to a pub gig in a 40' full-on tour bus, demanding this and that and acting like Axel Rose. The "barrow boy" charm which made him popular back in the day is evidently long gone, which is sad, it would be something to capitalise on and win him loyal support (kind of like Biff, one of the boys, a down-to-earth geezer with an honest grin) rather than acting like a precocious rock star (which, after all, he never was, having missed the boat).
Shame.
Most bands soon realise that Crew are the foot soldiers that make the show happen. Without them, it doesn't matter how good the band are, the show will be shit, if it happens at all. Evidently Mr D hasn't quite appreciated that in the past.

Whilst I was in Germany to see Saxon in 2001 I was going to take in a Dianno show but the tour was cancelled. I e-mailed the band to see what had happened and this was the reply -:

Really sorry if you've made plans but we had to re-organise a totlly
different set of shows.The person organising the original tour Totally
screwed up and gave us no option but to do this.Without going into too
much
detail to have done that tour would have basically finished us off and
we
didn't want that so we fired that person and re-arranged the whole
tour.At
present there are no German shows in but we will start booking again
real
soon.Remind us in the future of the problems this also caused you and
i'll
see you get into some shows as a free guest ok.

Well Bert, you're not going to be disappointed cos they're not doing those songs in December!!!!!!!. I'm absolutely gutted cos those 3 songs were the ones that I was desperate to hear, and in fact those basically are the only 3 songs that I really like and since they're not doing them at all, I'm seriously thinking of selling my ticket. They're doing the whole of the new album - yes the WHOLE OF THE NEW ALBUM - which is bad news for me since I don't think its up to much.

I was out last Friday seeing 3 bands and in between the bands coming on some Maiden concert was being shown on big screen and to hear Bruce doing Running Free and Sanctuary was just too horrific for wordsuke: .
