Paul Gray (Slipknot) Found Dead

Iowa is really sweet.

It would be seriously weird for them to go on now, what with their number system. They should just retire his number and name the next guy #9.

First slipknot was ok...IOWA was really what grabbed me by the nuts and made me start paying attention to them for their music and not for their hype. It's really the only album of theirs I was attatched to.

I remember back when I was a freshman in H.S., I went and saw Sepultura/Biohazard/Spineshank/One Minute Silence on Valentines Day. There were dudes at the doors on the way out giving out sampler tapes to everyone. The tape was a 2 song promo for Slipknot. I spun it on the way home...it wasn't super terrible. Then, I saw them at Ozzfest that summer and thought a little more of them. Literally 2 months later: BAM! Half the school was wearing slipknot shirts, and thats about all I heard about for the next 3 years. I remember walking by kids arguing over who was the bigger slipknot fan and they got to the "I heard em before you did" points...I just chuckled to myself. None of them had even SEEN slipknot yet, while I was the first at the school AND I had seen em.

The overnight over-hype of them made me turn away from them...not because I was too kvlt and bR00t or anything, but it was just oversaturated too fast for me. It was when I moved to Montana, and there were like 5 people in my area who even knew who slipknot was, when I could finally enjoy them again...with the release of IOWA. I listened to that album for a few months straight, peppered in with DHIADW/Iced Earth "Horror Show"/the first Dragonlord disc and my Death collection, since Chuck was on his way out.

Speaking of that...if I remember correctly, I think Slipknot was one of the bigger contributors of signed memorabilia and stuff to the ebay auctions to raise money for Chuck's treatments. They were getting a bad reputation from all the extreme metal fans based on their fanbase being trend zombies, yet they were doing whatever they could to help the cause. I think that says something for them.

Probally 1 album with the material they still have, do a tour without him or any bassist and sort of in honour of him I think that's what will happen..
Given that a few of them were into doing side projects with different people, and filling in for other bands in their time of need, something tells me they aren't going to be too uptight about finding someone else to fill the spot...given some time to air out the grieving process.

Everyone is always quick to assume a band is done when a member dies. Def Leppard, KISS, Alice In Chains, Metallica, AC/DC, etc...

Usually only ever 'the end' if the main man dies, the real backbone of the band. Only exception to this has been Thin Lizzy, but I still think everyone has turned a blind eye to them since Phil died.

Yeah cmon guys , it's slipknot , they are printing money , they are not gonna stop because a BASSIST died. He probably was a nice guy but cmon he plays BASS. Not irreplaceable. I mean Avenged is still going and they lost their drummer , who was great and a big part of their sound.

Of course they will continue, I mean the bassist isn't really THAT important, they can always get another one.

Also, my favourite album has to be Iowa, but I like all the albums, and I'd put All Hope Is Gone as my second favourite, I really like Child Of Burning Time :D

OT but I just did the AIC gig here in jersey a few days ago and i gotta say, Lanes replacement is amazing live. The whole set was incredible.

That wasn't the point of what I was saying...it had little to do with what the band was doing, it had to do with what everyone thought the band was going to do. First stretch of time after something like this happens, band usually goes dormant and people just assume they are done.
Alice In Chains was a weird animal because everyone thought Layne was THE voice of the band...it was really an even split with Cantrell.

In cases like Death/Control Denied, Type O Negative, Heaven & Hell, etc...where it was either the main person of the band, or there just really isn't any way to see the band continuing without one of the integral members...it is understandable that the band would be done. If Vinnie Appice had died instead of Dio (mind you, I'm only hypotheical), they probably would just replace him with someone else. If Geezer or Tony had died, it would be the same way as it is now: done. If Hetfield had been killed on the bus instead of Cliff, I would wager Metallica would be done.

It really depends on the prominance of who's in the band, and whether the rest of the band can weigh on being able to replace them (some cases, because they have some shit in a contract binding them to keep going whether they like it or not). If Corey Taylor had died yesterday, Slipknot would most definitely be done. Jordison? Maybe. If it was Sid/Chris/Craig, they'd probably be able to replace them or continue without them since they are kinda just there. Maybe I'm totally off base, but it just seems realistic to think it comes down to prominence of the member.

I gotta say this is 100% my thoughts also
