Picking album songs

I have about 20 songs and 5 more song ideas that I feel could all go on the same record, but it's just too much. How do you choose?

Is an album better as a collection of good but different and varied songs, or as a group of songs that sound similar/follow similar themes?

IMO it is a mixture of the two.
You want all songs to be strong, not create a monotny in the album, flow well after one another and make the experience as a whole enjoyable.

If you have that many songs, try a few different trial approaches and pick the one you feel best represents your music.

^ agree.

I love albums that start out with a fucking fury, and then a bit more tame in the middle, then kick your ass again to close out the CD. Like a musical journey, as cheesy as that may sound.
