pickups help

joey what pickups would you put on a EPIPHONE LP STANDARD PLUS VSB?

Depends entirely what you are aiming for. Rhythm or lead? What kind of music? If you are going for dragonforce speeds or sludge metal, they pretty much require different sound.

If you are aiming for the generic heavy metal rhythms, active pickups like EMG 81 on the bridge is a "safe" choice, but some people prefer DiMarzios, some Seymour Duncans, and some even prefer some passive pickups. For example Ola Englund uses the stock Ibanez pickups on all his clips and his tone is pretty brutal. I suggest that you go to your local guitar shop, try out all the Les Paul type guitars different pickup types and listen which ones you like the most. Then ask from the sales rep what the pickups are and if they don't know, google the model and find out what it usually has stock equipped and then buy those pickups.

Personally I really like the EMG 81 on the bridge, but lately I've been getting pretty bored at it, but when I try something else, the EMG always wins, so I just return to it. But after I watched the DAR FORZA amp demo, I really want a guitar with a single coil on the neck for the leads. I just love the brightness and twang of them.

ahjteam hello

ola englund gets the "headbang the shit out of your parents" tone.

i want the "joey sturgis" tone.

i saw of mice and men used some lp's on their album
i want that kind of tone. what pickups they used?

here one guitarist uses some different pickups and in the studio i think he used blackouts. lets see what joey says.

Agreed with above

And I would also add that in some cases it has to do with the player and not just the genre/sub-genre of music

Personally I love the 81/85 combo but for the most part it doesn't switch off from the 81. 707s in my 7 string are awesome and I'm not really into some of the newer/cheaper EMGs, try just sound cheap and poorly made

Of Mice & Men have no customized guitars. The guitars you see are stock. Most of my bands use EMG's or just stock otherwise. There are a few rare / specific cases when the musician is actually interested in his craft instead of chasing tail on tour. Like Nick Sampson of I Am Abomination. He'd probably be happy to chime in about their record, and both Of Mice & Men records considering he recorded the guitar for both OM&M, and probably remembers what pick ups I tracked for their record.

what do you mean? nick sampson recorded ofmice records? :/
or they recorded it with stock pickups?
where can i find his mail?

what pickups would you put on this guitar?

Nick is Joey's engineer, he would know what guitars/pickups because he tracks guitars and whatnot for Joey

Nick is also the guitarist of IAA so he would have info ontheir cd as well

And I would keep them stock IMHO

And just my .02 but if you're tracking a shitty guitarist switching to a guitar with EMGs isnt going to instantly make the tone better

Yup, changing the player makes way bigger difference. Jeff Loomis sounds like Jeff Loomis, even thru Roland Microcube.

Nick is on the board. I'm sure he'll get around to seeing this post.
Nick is my engineer and records guitars for me when I employ him to, in my studio. I hate recording guitar because my ear for pitch is quite accurate... So most chords and playing to me sounds like 75% of the American Idol auditions. :erk:

Both of mice records were tracked with the same guitar and the same pickups both times.

The guitar was a Gibson Les Paul standard with the stock pickups. These pickups are naturally pretty hot and the overall tone of the guitar is extremely chunky.

The guitars were strung with a set of blue steel 12's which had a 20g wound g string.

I remember adjusting the pickup height pretty high on the bridge pickup for that over the top grit.

As far as the guitar you see Shaylee playing in that video, its an Epiphone Les Paul with a passive EMG-HZ in the bridge.. far from my first choice and it was definitely not used on either record!

Hey Nick!

I just want to buy a LP Style guitar an replace the stock with gibson pick-ups.
You say you used the gibson stock ones. Which one do you recommend exactly? Because the gibson guitars have often different pickups. Do you know which one were built in the guitars you used?

best regards!
