Platitude - Silence Speaks
Metal Heaven - 00015 - Feb. 24, 2006

A beautiful blend of mystical keyboards, melodic and creative guitar riffs, and a strong vocal display make up all that Platitude presents with their third album, Silence Speaks. The band that immediately comes to mind in comparison is Magnitude 9 theres that same slightly mellow feel. They really focus a lot on beauty in their music, using metal as a launch pad for their progressive exploration.
One truly progressive track is "Empty Inside." They take the opportunity to jump on different paths, incorporating some off-time heavy bits as bookends to atmospheric keyboard moments and catchy choruses. The keyboard sound is unique to most prog in that he rarely uses the typical synth that can be found in almost any prog or power metal band. The sounds he does use throughout the album create a very dreamlike atmosphere. Most of the musical elegance comes from that surreal overlay.
For someone like myself who craves fast and heavy with all that melodic goodness, Silence Speaks can get a bit trite after a while. Apparently, they had been of the neoclassical power metal style on their debut album and have now traveled into a more subdued realm. Theyve got the skills every prog musician must encompass, but they are a test of ones attention span.
7.5/10
