Points North - Instrumental band

Cool band, I like instrumental stuff, and the Dregs/Dixie Dregs influence is here as well, which is an added bonus as I'm a Dregs fan too...

I have mixed feelings about this band. On one hand, they are really good.

On the other hand, my brother was the drummer in a folk band named The Points North which actually formed BEFORE this one.

It sucks that there only so many possible ideas for band names.

They are a great band, I was hanging out with the guitarist Eric this last weekend at the Red Dragon Cartel show in San Jose. PN is getting ready for a record release party/show coming up soon. For those that do not know Uriah Duffy is the bass player too, he was in Whitesnake for about 5 years too!

Hey there...Eric Barnett from Points North here, I just happened to stumble across this thread...and thank you all for the kind words, I'm very grateful!!!

As far as the band name thing; I'm aware of the "The Points North", and I think they are quite cool (though very different from us of course). Please give my best to your brother! Some of the online sites like bandsintown.com get us confused :/

As far as which band name came first, of course I'm not sure of their history, and they wouldn't have been aware of us, but Points North formed in 2005 and started performing in 2006. Here's one of our first flyers:

There's no way they would have heard of us back them, we really weren't even a "serious" band then, just kind of writing and playing for our own enjoyment, and we're at opposite ends of the country. I can tell you at least that I hadn't heard of them myself when we named the band.

And I don't know when they might have heard of us; they are listed online as forming in 2008 but I appreciate they might have formed much sooner. The first things that Points North did that I can think of that might have gotten us on their radar were opening for Michael Schenker in 2008, and that same year when I was a finalist in Guitar Player Magazine's Guitar Superstar competition.

Anyway, as you say, there's only so many names, and the names aren't exactly the same, and it seems that we're all doing ok (less the occasional confusion!). So the particulars of the story really don't matter that much; I just thought your post was interesting and wanted to speak to it. I hope that's OK.

Again, all the best to your brother and "The Points North" - in fact, should we ever be in the same part of the country, it would be really interesting and maybe fun (different styles aside) if we could play a show together someday. :) There's a few other bands that have formed recently with similar names too...Six Points North, Two Points North, there's others...
