I must admit, when I first heard this lineup, I was not thrilled. Only recognizing three or four of the bands. But I am also one of the older fans of the festival (as Glenn well knows). And so don’t constantly search for new and different bands with a wide range of music diversity. My first thought was Glenn’s aiming for the young fans again. I seriously doubted this would sell out and even worse, it could be the end of the festival … in a rather sad finish. No final show, just pull the plug at the end XVI.
But then I started exploring the bands and listening to some clips. While there are definitely some that won’t appeal to me or some of other older fans (not that I am trying to speak for all fans my age), there’s certainly enough to get my attention and gladly return. Dynazty and Helker certainly could be a hell of a good show. Lots of energy and riffs. Likewise Anathema could be quite good … as long as they steer clear of the 90’s material. The newer stuff certainly has Pink Floyd's atmosphere, almost to the extreme. But I like good emotional music with some epic feel. Other bands are just not my taste. Hibria sounds little too dine-a-dozen speed metal. And Persefone is very off-putting with the extreme vocals. I remember Voyager being pretty good live, even if their albums disappointed. Falconer I have heard of for years but never really explored. They and Morgana Lefay are next on the listening list. As for the bands I am familiar with, Royal Hunt with DC is on the bucket list. Angra with Holy Land is definitely a plus. I kind of gave up on them years ago, but they did put on a good live show at their last PP performance. Riverside I should like but just can’t get into. I own at least the first album. I found it just too brooding and boring. Likewise, I should like Anubis Gate with their progressive metal but they made no impression on me the last time they played. I pulled out the one album I own, Andromeda Unchained, but couldn’t get through it. The vocalist and music are just too disjointed. Maybe their newer albums are better.
Personally I would have liked to have seen one or two more bands I know and love that are not newcomers to the festival (i.e Threshold, Evergrey and Circus Maximus). But I suspect Glenn would say that's too much inbreeding. And he's probably right. But just one of those bands would be great!
Anyway, here’s hoping I am wrong with that first impression and the festival sells out in glorious fashion. I will certainly do my part and buy a ticket as well as promote it.
In the end, to me it’s more than just the bands at the festival. There’s the friends, good times, Atlanta restaurants, and beer. But most all, my type of vacation; so much going on you temporarily forget about the worries of the job and family. I am just there to get lost in a fun and safe festival. May the festival continue for years to come! And when Glenn finally hangs up his hat, I hope someone else continues, if not in the PP name, at least something like it.
OK Glenn, you may now ban me.
