ProgPower XXVI

This ProgPower thing is getting out of hand. What's next? ProgPower Madagascar? ProgPower Seychelles? ProgPower Jamaica? (yea, mon!) :D

Only way PP can get outta hand Pellaz is if it becomes home to corporate metal like BWBK apparently has. I say a PP for every country, even Bankruptia!
:loco:

In regards to ProgPower UK, the organizers approached Rene (Europe & the originator) and myself and asked for permission to use the name after presenting us with their plans.

As for Australia, I'm glad it was canceled as no one ever contacted me (or Rene to my knowledge) about using the name or making a mockery of the number system.

you're insane.

I was there and I stand by my statement. I see you are from Cleveland, so maybe you were there too. First 2 years they have Grave Digger, Brainstorm, Primal Fear, Candlemass etc. etc. Then this year they have zero bands like that, and instead death and black metal bands mainly (who BTW were already on U.S. tour anyway - where's the novelty in that?). Even had a carnival barker there from FYE. The venue is owned by Clear Channel, who is now basically the sponsor. How much more do I need to say? Doesn't sound like corporate to you?

My ass. I suppose you didn't notice that Death Angel, Trouble, Jag Panzer, Chris Caffery, Exciter, and Raven were there? yes, VERY commercial... these bands are all featured on radio stations and MTV on a daily basis... NOT.

In case you missed it, the headliners were Chris Caffery, Death Angel, and Trouble. Not Linkin Park, Korn, and Godsmack. Not Poison, Warrant, and Ratt.

and instead death and black metal bands mainly

1) What does death and black metal have to do with being "commercial"? 2) The most commercially-sucessful bands at the show were metalcore/melodic death (Mnemic/Dark Tranquillity/Soilwork), and they are hardly the most well-known metalcore/melodeath bands around... if As I Lay Dying and Shadows Fall had played, then MAYBE your statement could have a tiny bit of truth to it. 3) There was no black metal present at the show. I'd actually like to see some added next year. Interestingly enough, the lack of black metal didn't prevent me from buying my first ever black metal shirt (Bathory s/t, and I think you were the vendor I bought it from).

(who BTW were already on U.S. tour anyway - where's the novelty in that?).

1) What does lack of novelty have to do with commercial success? The two things are not related. 2) There have been bands who have scheduled a tour around ProgPower as well.

Even had a carnival barker there from FYE.

Admittedly, I was ready to throw that guy against the wall, were it not for the fact that it would have taken a team of horses and a block and tackle to lift him. I also know for a fact that this wasn't Mark Gromen's idea OR his fault, and that he was none too happy about it either.

The venue is out of business as of this March (I think). Even so, you can't blame the show for the business transactions of the venue. Most, if not all, of the venues in Cleveland are Clear Channel sponsored... are you going to insist that every show that hits these venues is "too corporate"? It takes sponsors to run a show like this, just as it takes sponsors to run ProgPower USA.

Your arguments make it sound more like you were simply unhappy with the lineup, and not that the lineup was too commercial.

Holy geez man, this whole schpeel started as me joking with Pellaz about PP, and now you're going off the deep end. OK, so I will try to explain myself oh heirarchy one of doom...

As a promoter myself, I notice when the complexion changes in an event, and I clearly saw that this time. Year 3 was NOTHING like year 1 and 2. For one, the vendors room had no a/c all weekend long, which is just great for sales. Everyone in the room noticed it, that is except for the promoter. Another thing was the p.a. wasn't set right for many of the acts. Hell, the only thing that sounded good about Ripper's new band Thursday night was Ripper. The band didn't sound right at all, and it wasn't their lack of musicianship either. Yet another thing was the baby blimp from FYE, who you say Mark had no control over? Give me a break. If someone is freaking out everyone around them (and he was), you fix the problem. I finally shut the idiot up, so I guess I was the only one with enough balls to say something. It needed to be done, and the labels couldn't say anything for fear BWBK mag would retalliate while doing writeups on their bands, which I can understand completely, but the disturbance shouldn't even have happened at all. I could go on and on, but one thing I will definately make a point of is that, NO my beef isn't because I didn't like the lineup. I do tons of shows where the lineup is just so-so to me, I can deal with that. The fact is that the event wasn't ran well this time... NOTHING like the way it was ran in years 1 and 2. And as for the "corporate" blurb, you'll never see Glenn go corporate, and if you don't understand what I mean by that then there's no need for this discussion to even take place. Also, Glenn, as an example, is an excellent promoter. He covers ALL the details. That can't be said for this past show in Cleveland. If you don't like my outlook on it then fine, but I still stand by what I have said.

didn't mean to sound grouchy... my point is that I've been to lots of corporate-buttfuck shows in the past... and this was most definitely not one of them. In fact, it was one of the least corporatized shows I've been to in Cleveland so far.

That's ok, it's all good. I guess we just have different observations on what actually was happening there that's all. You seemed to have enjoyed the event, and I saw plenty of flaws. No big buzz, just a different set of eyes looking at the same event.

Out of perverse curiosity, who was this guy, what did he do and how did you shut him up?

He was just some baby blimp idiot company boy from FYE who was in there screaming at the top of his lungs for people to come into the vendor room and buy a band's CD so they could then get a free t-shirt. He was even screaming IN the vendor room, which was a tiny, un-airconditioned hole in the wall.

I just told him to turn down the volume, that we had long since had enough. And that was it. Finally... some peace and quiet. :)

there was nothing "baby-esque" about that blimp... lol...

"MEET HAVOCHATE!!!! RIGHT NOW!!!! SIGNING AUTOGRAPHS AT THE FYE BOOTH RIGHT NOW!!!!! MEET HAVOCHATE!!!!!!!!"

I don't think I can ever enjoy HavocHate now, just because of that guy. Shame, though. Supposedly, they're a pretty good band.

That's for sure. One of the vendors mentioned about how the behemoth didn't fit in there, probably didn't listen to "our" music. I replied, hell, he doesn't spend money on ANY music, he's too busy buying FOOD. What a pathetic loser. ha ha

But you're right, I find it more tranquil to not think about that episode.
