Progressive Mixing

Been thinking about this concept for a little while now..

The idea of automating the mix to gradually change throughout a song/EP/album

For example, you find two guitar tones that work well with your current mix and start with one, then have it slowly fade [through the duration of the mix] while the other tone comes up accordingly, so you'll have the tone steadily change.

I wanted to try this with a mix, however all the songs have to be mixed in a single session. As far as I know, anyways.

Anyone ever done something like this?

I get what you're getting at. I think the only time it would be acceptable (if done VERY smoothly) would be in a full length though. As having the tone change throug out 4-5 songs might sound like a production mistake and be perceived as inconsistent mixing.

Sidenote: why would you want to do this in the first place? Experimentation?

For the most part, I would think it'd be cool as a subtle progression, for progressive music, preferably. Might be a little weird for radio rock. Haha

I think it would just add something unique to the whole mix.
