Project Morfeo - Dicotomia
Trostlos Records - TR601 - January 2006
By Paul Raw Nerve
I never expected to see a line quite like the opening one of the press release, quoting:- 'A gothic tincture imparted on an electronic fabric sewn by rhythmic feelings'. Quite!
I feel a little misinformed when told 'Gothic, hard rock & electronica' whilst the gorgeous ambience of 'Dark corners' swells around my ears, but it seems more correct as we move on, and when the slightly Mortiis meets Type O Negative styled 'Walk away' comes along, I hear how that would be the truth.
The more impressive moments of this album for me, brought to us by solo musician Gianfranco Biagini (with help from a guest and a producer) comes from the electronic sounds. The previously mentioned third song has some cool weirdness in the middle, 'Night creatures' is an excellent Eastern tinged affair, and there are a few other trancey edges throughout. I have to admit to not being a massive fan of this style overall.
I prefer really old school goth oddness like Bauhaus, Sex Gang Children, even the Sisters of Mercy, or something a little more industrial in its crunch, but this makes for a decent calming listen.
5/10
