I have bought stuff from V5 in the past and have also found stuff through other means that is for 'promotional use only'. How many of you have those type of copies of stuff and how much of it is in your collection?

I have about 20-30 promotional copies of stuff floating around. I don't know if it makes them more valuable or what, but I don't really care if something is promotional or not. I'd rather have a jewel case than a slip case for them though.

Typically they are less valuable, collectibly speaking. But if there is different cover art or different trackilisting or whatever, then they can be more valuable. Promo only releases are typically very valuable, depending on the band. But promo copies of the regular album are not. Cardboard sleeve regular album promos are like the bottom of the whole promo family IMO.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I own some. Not sure how many. I don't mind much, but I prefer to have full booklets, so if they are limited to less inserts, I like them less. I also dislike the big gold stamp some promos had. I own a few slipcases, and in most cases I don't even feel I own those releases. It's a mental thing.

I used to get promotional copies from a record store that recently closed down. I knew one of the guys that worked there and he would hook it up. I would rather have the real cd because promotionals are divided into 30+ tracks even if the real cd only has 12 tracks for example.
I gave most of mine away and the only one I think I still have is Amorphis Silent Waters.

I remember finding (The) Fire Birds - No. 3 at buybacks and just going :kickass::headbang::err:. Then later i found it was a promotional copy but i was still psyched, didn't expect to find something like that anywhere in the state of Ohio. I have ordered probably around 20 cds that were promotional, but i always just look for the 'stamp in the bar code' and then decide against ordering it.

I only own one, and I cut it up to make inserts for a jewel case. It's Dominion III's The Hand and the Sword, which I won on eBay not knowing it was only a promo.

I've uploaded to iTunes several promos from the music library at the college radio station.

As for promos I receive from The Metal Observer, so far all of them have been sent digitally through Yousendit emails from Alex and Valerie (his wife, not LadyValerie).

Yes, a couple of CDs I bought used at the store turned out to be promo copies. I know I have a promo copy of North from Here (could I get a lot of $ for selling that?), but I know I have others as well.

I got the between the buried and me one for Colors at a Lamb of God concert I pretty much threw it out though lol

One of my friends is the metal director for the radio station on our campus, so he gets promotional and regular copies of stuff mailed to him all the time. Sometimes he brings them by my room so that I can rip them to my computer, and sometimes he just gives me extra copies of stuff.

Thanks to him, I have a cardboard sleeve copy of Winds of Plague - Decimate the Weak and he let me rip a "promotional use only" version of Cradle of Filth's Thornography to my computer. My computer eventually shit the bed though and I lost the files, but to be honest I really don't miss them.

Is it a Spinefarm promo ?

I actually just got a promotional copy of Bury Your Dead's Beauty and the Breakdown that I got my dad off Amazon. Kinda pissed me off, because I paid $7.00 and the description said absolutely nothing about that.

Amazon is fucking good for that. Such incidences are the epitome of annoyance.

I have a handful of promos. Sometimes they are giveaways by local bands at Metal Haven. I won the Massive Conspiracy Against All Life promo on Ebay because I didn't read the description closely enough. Didn't bother me too much.

I can't believe so many promos are totally worthless, since they are surely produced in a much smaller quantity than the real release.
