The latest release from California progressive rock band Prymary is their second offering on the ProgRock Records label name and as an album, is a great deal more focussed than their last self-titled musical piece of work, good as it was. The Tragedy of Innocence, in the band's own words, is a concept album and ‘is based on real events and tells the story of a young woman who must deal with abuse and how these events steer her towards a chaotic adult life.’ As can be imagined, this is a dark and ambitious project to write about, but Prymary handle this admirably. The music sounds like an eclectic fusion of Steve Vai, Dream Theater, Queensryche, Megadeth, Mr Bungle and strangely enough Ozric Tentacles, a combination of crunching riffs, complex experimental guitar and keyboard shredding and constant changes of timing, overlain with Mike Di Sarro’s startling Dave Mustaine-esque vocals. The songs are interwoven throughout with female narrative, adding more detail to the story. If you are a fan of this style of music, you’ll love this album and I really did like it, though personally I think they should cut out the female part as it does sound pretty cheesy and Di Sarro’s lyrics tell enough of the tale without it needing to be overemphasized. Prymary are unfortunately currently experiencing problems due to the departure of singer Mike Di Sarro, but definitely keep an ear out for their future releases.
