When one has an IQ level as low as mine, it becomes hard to make much sense of names like Neaera, Korpiklaanii, and yours truly, Psychotheque. Googling for information on such bands is a colossal effort in its own, because one (me) never knows if they are actually spelling the name right, and no matter what they try, all that comes up is the top 10 French massage therapists, even if “I’m Feeling Lucky” is bypassed. After that mess finally fizzles out, one realizes that they’ve accomplished nothing and must guess on information such as nationality, discography, and other somewhat nitpicky facts. So, with names like Bonazolli, Capelli (x2), and Sarzi, one could infer that this band possibly hails from Italy and that they are a quartet. As for discography? I don’t think so.

Oh how I have a soft spot in my heart for delayed guitars. Bands like U2 and Keane are all guilty pleasures in my book. Though they are ridiculously similar, it’s something I’m willing to live with because all that means is more material for the purchasing. Psychotheque sails in the same boat as the aforementioned, although a little more raw. The vocals vary off key purposely, the drums don’t like to be too dynamic, and I’ve yet to hear a guitar harmony. Fortunately, this is something I enjoy to an extent, because a few songs, such as ’Broken’, have ventured into my “Top 25 Playlist”. Even though the running time falls on the short side, my attention span is tested dramatically. Even the cool synth passages and simplistic, beautiful piano lines get old only twenty minutes in.

So after several spins (which may have been one too many), all I have to say is that our friends Psychotheque are capable of writing some extremely stellar tunes, but the combination of sounding a little too much like their adversaries and being experts at the repetition game make this a less than desirable commodity in too short of time to warrant it a justifiable release.

*Note*- Now that I’ve realized the typo I’ve been making, they’ve released a demo- this is their first full length
