Glenn wanted to add this to his awesome metal drum guide and he wrote it can get pretty in-depth.

So, what do I need to know? Punching in after a break is pretty obvious but what do I have to take care of when there is no break? I would let the drummer play a few bars and punch in where he stopped just like with a guitar player.

Yup, 4-8 bars before, pray you get the cymbal bleed right. Gotta be super anal about which cymbals he's playing, and keep it consistent. Drummers like to switch things up randomly on you, sneaky bastards!

Yeah, give him plenty of pre-roll so that he'll ideally get through a section where you're having little cymbal decay. And what Jeff said about drummers randomly changing things up while recording sounds like a joke but it's the sad truth haha. You just gotta love it when the drummer you're recording plays a solid take, you're figuratively praying for him to get through and all out of the blue he'll improvise a fill or some accents, knocking himself completely off the beat.

Plenty of pre-roll & some creative slip-editing can work wonders. Just make sure the dumb motherfucker hits the same cymbals the second time around. If I had a dollar for every time some retard punched in his drums & changed his cymbal pattern.........

Session goes like this:

Me: Ok, let's give that section another shot. I'll give you a nice, long lead-in. You can play along & it'll drop in automatically. ...should be no problem.

Drummer: *duh*... ok?

Me: Seriously, just play the same part again, just don't fuck up this time.

Drummer: oh. I can do that!

Pre-roll starts, drummer takes 2-3 bars to sync up.... and promptly hits different cymbals as the punch engages.

Drummer: That worked awesome!

Me: facepalm.

So, with the drummer acting proud of himself, I play back the punch in his headphones. I always love watching the emotion go from joy to shame as he realizes his mistake.

Me: So, shall we try that again? This time, maybe you can play the part the same way as you did before? So it won't bad?
