QUEEN REVIEW OCTOBER 22, 2005 HOLLYWOOD BOWL, CALIFORNIA
Well its a beautiful night for a show! Under the stars at the Hollywood Bowl, no opening band, just a full evening of Queen and Paul Rodgers. After spending almost 2hrs in traffic I got to the venue 15 min. before show time. Picked up the tour book, dog tag necklace & FM foundation charity bracelet. Quick stop for coffee, got to have something to mix with the mini bottle of Baileys I snuck in! Off to my seat, waaay up there, sucked but I was there!!
They open with Reaching out, Tie you mother down followed by Fat Bottom Girls, what a great way to start a show!! In the beginning of Another one bites the dust, Paul is sounding a bit like Klaus Meine (xoxo okay with me!) After the first chorus of Another one bites the dust, Paul leads the Audience into a chant of Yeah, Yeah, Yeah which bored me to death! The first 4 songs I was really struggling to hear the vocals, they were really turned low, the drums are a bit muffled and muddy. Hell, even Journey was turned up louder than this show!! But the lady in front of me didnt like it when I screamed TURN UP THE VOCALS!! I did hear a couple people around me say hell yeah to that!
Next up is Crazy little thing called Love and they put a new spin on the song mixing it up just a bit. The next song blew me away Bad company, I was surprised because I had no idea that they were incorporating Bad Co. songs with this show. I thought it would be all Queen songs with Paul singing. It was a very nice surprise.
Roger Taylor took the stage next and sings a song written for Nelson Mandela but dedicated to Freddie Mercury. Say its not true is the song, but Ive never heard it before tonight. I think he also did 39.
Brian May came out next and did just an Acoustic song. The Hollywood Bowl is in a valley and all around are big hills, envision a foggy evening, above the venue there are two light beams shooting across forming an X over the bowl. To the right on the hill is a illuminated Cross. Brian sits alone onstage with his guitar and dedicates to Freddie, Love of my Life. During the whole song pictures of Freddie are flashing on the huge screens around the park, lighters and phones are out, people are softly singing along, the mist is falling and looking around so are the tears. It was a very touching and moving moment. *insert tissue here* Brian switches back to an electric guitar and they go on to do a slow version of Its Late blending into a faster Hammer to Fall.
B.C.s Feel like making love comes next and still its either Paul just doesnt have that belting ability anymore or the vocals are still too damn low. After this song comes a quick drum solo not too long not too short, just right. Im in love with my car is next followed by a May guitar solo. During the solo there is film footage running in the background, moving clouds, lighting an excellent photo op., just wish I wouldve been closer!
Roger Taylor comes on stage again and sings Last Horizon and Days of our Lives during these songs old 70s footage of Queen is showing in Black and White, them goofing around in Japan, pictures with the guys backstage and some live footage. Radio Gaga is next and other than B.R. song I think this had a lot of people on their feet clapping along.
Slash shows up on stage to join in on Cant get enough of your love, does his guitar solo. Then Rock and Roll fantasy, Paul just didnt have it on this one imo. I want it all and the finale Bohemian Rhapsody with nothing but Freddie on film playing the intro on piano. Paul and the guys join in at the last break, --so you think you can love me and leave me to die, then finish the song out the entire time live Queen footage is playing on screen.
Encore: The show must go on, all right now, we will rock you/ we are the champions.
All in all is was great to be a part of this show, I was glad I got a ticket. Though in the end Im still left with wishing I couldve been able to see them when Freddie was still with us. We miss you Freddie.
