I was just wondering, where or how did you learn to do vocals? I want to try to learn to sing but I just don't know how to even find my singing voice. Did you get lessons or something?

No, I could actually benefit from lessons. I have little control, but i'm not tone deaf, which helps a lot. It's all practice and confidence. It took me many years of doing it before I was comfortable with it, and being honest I still swet it from time to time. Lessons are a good idea though.

Wow, that's cool you can growl like that without lessons, its so clear. Now to just find out where to get lessons to sound like Paul Baloff lol

Can you even get teachers who teach you to growl? lol

Doubtful, but you can find teachers who can teach you proper breathing techniques and how to sing from your gut and get better projection and control. Learning to do a death metal voice is one thing but learning how to do it with projection, clarity and also being able to switch between clean and growls back 'n forth is much trickier to learn.

I agree with the comments above.
The clarity of Paul's growls sets them apart from tons of bands in the doom / death genre. It is a nice change to be able to actually understand the lyrics (which are always amazing too!)

Well another question...how often do you practice, Paul?

Not only "How often", but more importantly WHERE do you practice without people calling the cops? :tickled:

It must be quite something to hear Paul growling "a cappella"!!!

Yes and no. If any one is interested check this out. www.melissacross.com
This is who teaches the guys in Lamb of God and Shadows Fall and she offers a killer DVD and warm-up CD. I swear by it and highly recommend it for metal singers of all styles. she teaches the correct way to breath, how to project ( Paul, you can skip this part) and basically everything else you need to know so you don't hurt yourself.
