what is it that REALLY draws you to these amps? i mean enough to spend $1600 on them (talking about the revolution more or less)

i tried one for the 3rd time yesterday, and while it has it's likeable qualities (tight, clear, very nice clean channel) there's two things about it that bug me

-turning up the mid knob never seems to give me that evil midrange grind that i really love

-to make the amp sound heavy, i had to get the gain up to fuzz levels

i respect the honest opinions of people here, moreso than some places on the web and i'm not trying to bash anyone...just curious as to why it is some people here like them enough to drop the cash on one

the chadwick 50 on the other hand, was a very pleasant surprise...very nice crunchy high gain sounds, and stellar clean as well; i'd love to have a chance to crank one of these up thru my own cabs and throw a boost in front

I don't own a Krank, but we tried out a Revolution while getting guitar sounds for our new album and it was just way too thin for rhythm tones. No matter how we tweaked it we couldn't get a full, thick tone. We ended up using a Dual Rectifier and 5150 instead. We did use the Krank for lead tones, it did those pretty well. All in all I don't think they're worth $1600.

I have the Revolution series 1 head. Quite happy, hell I borrow it out to Buds when they record in studios. I run it thru my 4x12 Marshall straight cab, and have tried different mics. Keep going back to the 57. I think it's the sweep knob that does all the business for these amps. I use the gain on 5 or 7 and it's plenty of crunch for us. Plus inserting a Waves SSL plug-in to it's track really brings out some nice tonage.

$1,600.00? W.T.F. ? When I bought mine I told everyone who wanted a BRAND NEW KranK Rev. series 1 where I got mine!

I paid $1,199.00:kickass:

GORILLA

The sweep control alters the frequency range of the other EQ knobs. Set it low and it affects the lower frequencies of each of the 3 tone controls, set it high and it affects the higher frequencies of each tone control. I know that may sound confusing, but if you set the sweep low, it affects the "low" lows, the "low" mids and the "low" highs. As you turn it up the frequencies it affects shift upwards as well. Jody from Krank told me it was like a sweepable mids control on mixers and stuff, only it does it for all 3 tone controls.

I've only played a Revolution with a Krank cab, and not super loud. But, at the volumes I played it (loud bedroom playing) through the Krank cab, it crushed...Super thick ass tone. I loved it. But, I've heard them live and they've either sounded great, or like ass. So, I don't know. Like any amp, the user plays the role...I'd love to get my hands on one if I had the cash.

where do you guys set the sweep knob usually? i kept it in the middle...tried it slightly higher and lower also

btw i was using the krank cab, and an ltd mh400 with an emg81

FWIW my band played a show with shadows fall a while back, and they really sounded great with them...with my eyes closed i would've thought that had a recto and 5150, but they were both using revolutions for the heavy tones and chadwicks for cleans

It's an EQ knob.

I haven't seen an amp with EQ or knobs before. :p

But seriously, sounds intersting. I think I really need to hear it to understand perfectly. I'll try to find a place to try one sometime.

krank amps are the only amp i've played that provides very high gain and low noise. it's eq knobs make the most difference when u turn 'em out of ne amp i've ever played. some people say they sound to bright, but u just need to play around with one for like a week tops. to make it sound thicker, try putting a zakk wylde od in front of it using the clean boosting technique.

the sweep is the difference, you gotta figure out where you like it because it really does effect the other eq controls greatly! Plus yeah, it's thick, seriously thick :headbang:

ps - try the sweep around 9 o'clock

I'm quite interested in peoples opnions too. I have been debating which head to get to complement my JCM800. I've been considering either:

Krank Revolution
Older 5150
Dual Rectifier (older 2 channel)

I'm looking mostly for another amp to layer additional reamped guitars. The music I generally do is either straight ahead thrash metal, or As I Lay Dying type stuff....

If u go for krank, go for the krankenstein, in my opinion

here are my settings on my krankenstein:

Pres. - 5
Sweep - full
bass - 3.5
mid - 5
treble - 6
mast. 1 - 8
gain - 8.5
