Ok. But I'm curious, most bands have at least one flaw...and you can't tell me Metallica, Sepultura and Megadeth don't. I'm wondering whether these bands recieve the same treatment from you as Opeth on their respective boards...given your greater appreciation for riff-driven bands.
Nevermore is possibly my favourite band... well... The Politics of Ecstasy is possibly my favourite album by any band... and yet i can't stand Dead Heart in a Dead World, and everyone on the nevermore board knows it. I have had quite indepth discussions about the lack of depth to DHIADW, and i have also had huge flame-wars started by dementedly loyal fans that fail to see through the haze the a band's previous releases may create.
There have been people on this forum go "uuuhhh!???" when i mention Nevermore as technical and progressive... Politics was brilliant and technical, and amazing in terms of musicianship AND writing skills... simply because this is fact, and i love the album, does not mean that i ALSO have to love Dead Heart In A dead world... same with opeth... i love Still Life, MAYH... but i see no reason why i should blindly follow the BWP craze, or why i should go with the "cult" people on the forum and love Orchid...
I am not singling out opeth at all, when i do in fact discuss opeth, or make a comment about they, i am honest... be it positive or negative, or simply constuctive critisizm... If this thread was started because of the 'opeth lyric' thread, then you can be assured that i do in fact appreciate most of opeth's lyrics, but they have began/it has started to be obvious that there is asimple formula to their lyrics and to their music, and i fail to see the appeal to this, when the reason i got into the band is because out their unique style...
And in what way do you define your term juggernaught in this case? The overall greatness of the music? or record sales? You couldn't say Opeth has sold as many records as Sepultura...or Metallica...or Megadeth.
Record sales means nothing at all... megadeth sold SHIT ALL records up untill about rust in peace era... same with that era metallica and sepultura... they only started become 'big' when they simplified their music and compromised their styles... and yes, all three bands have done this, as has Nevermore and Opeth... they have all stripped their music of the depth that their music was so ripe with before.
I used the term 'juggernaught' in sub-conscious sarcasm, in the fact that opeth has such a huge following on UM as opposed to other bands... just useless Trapped-Jargon... nothing more.
