are the pre-SMRC releases (Inquistors of Satan, DsO/Clandestine Blaze split, Infernal Battles) worth checking out? I've heard that they're a little generic, but I've been listening to DsO lately, and it's gotten me curious about the rest of their backcatalogue.

The praise for IoS is wide and well deserved. Of course, few note that the version of "Drink the Devils Blood" on Infernal Battles is far better than the SMRC version.

But yes, check out early DsO. And, as they say... spin it 10 times before you decide.

I'll just confirm that IoS is very good indeed and well worth your attention and money. What really makes it stand out from the hordes of other lo-fi BM records is the band members' incredible skill when it comes to riffs and song composition, something even more obvious when considering the SMRC and Kenose redords.

The split with Clandestine Blaze is not in anyway bad, but I'm not that fond of CB, so even though the DSO tracks are good (and "The Suicide Curse" being nothing short of stunning), all in all it's just "good".

so if i didnt think much of SMRC or Kenose, is their a chance i might like the first two DSO albums? maybe a bit more like Hirilorn? less avant gardy than Kenose or SMRC?

Possibly. IoS is a very straightforward (but yet pretty solid) black metal album. I'd say give it a try.

Definitely. As others have said, it's fairly standard, straightforward Black Metal, but it is done quite well. While I appreciate what they did with Kenose and Fas, I prefer SMRC and their earlier stuff. While SMRC was a notable change in direction, it wasn't quite as far gone as they would become. I would recommend their earlier stuff.

TGD was telling me the early version was god awful. I don't know what to believe now :erk:

Look Matt, just be a good lad and get the oooooooooooolde stuff for the sake of your virginity. Seriously even the tracks on the DsO/Clandestine Blaze split warfare are absolute killers!

Infernal Battles is actually kinda awful.

Really inconsistent mix (and I'm not even talking about the demo tracks). Very repetitive tracks. The only Deathspell that I can't appreciate... Run of the mill black metal by far. They jumped light years ahead of them selves with the release of IoS.
