I've never tried punching in drums. I'm moving on to recording my second band in the next few days and we're going to use a click this time (fingers crossed!). I've punched in guitars with little or no difficulty but how much more difficult is it to punch in drums and what should I be weary of when doing it?

I'm not a good enough drummer to try this on my own so I haven't had a chance to play around with it. I don't want to waste anyone's else's time on it while they're recording, you know. I just want to avoid a scenario where it's like, "oh yeah, no problem I can punch you in" and then sure enough I try to do it and something goes wrong.

Also, when is the best time to crossfade the punch? I'm guessing right before the measure starts say with a kick and cymbal (where most of the audio at that point is maybe left over from a high hat hit).

it's the same principle as puching in with guitars......

just have say two bars selected in the pre-roll button ( i think that's what it's called) on the transport and volia it should start playing two bars before the selected drop in point (make sure record is on first obviously)

if you cannot hear the two bars before the recording kicks in push either 'apple k' or 'option k'

for fades I would personally go into slip mode, stretch out the tracks visually and then just move one take into the next until you cannot hear a click in between takes (or at least a very minimal click) then use 'beat detective' with a 5ms fade and select 'fill and crossfade'.

should work a treat

good luck
