Tight. God help me if I have to listen to 2 hours of songs like the one that I downloaded off this site. I never really got into Rage, and now I know why. That song "Down" is IMO "DOWN" right awful! I really hope that is not representative of all their stuff. I know they have been around for almost 20 years, but that song cannot be the reason why. Oh well, more time at the bar!

Although I buy about 100 CDs a year, I almost never buy CDs blind (without having heard them first). However, given that they are headling ProgPower, I decided to buy "Unity" at the suggestion of a number of board members. So, after seeing this thread, I decided to wander over to the Audio section of the PP site to check out this track. While I wouldn't say it's awful, and it's possible it may grow on me, I wasn't impressed with any aspect of the band from that track. I hope the rest of the CD is better.

I wasn't too impressed with that clip either, but I borrowed the Ghosts album from my friend, and it is outstanding. Really superb melodic heavy metal. I'd reccomend looking for some stuff from that album. I think that's one of the albums they did with a live orchestra, so I'm not sure if we can expect to hear songs from that album, but at least it's an example of what Rage is capable of.

Unity is not a good album to learn why Rage is a good band, I'll say that.

I bought Unity and Welcome To The Other Side, and was honestly impressed with neither. However, being the metal junkie that I am, I've allowed my Rage-fanatic friend to convince me that I need to hear their 1988-1994 period, and then give their 'orchestral' trilogy a chance as well. So I will. Cheers.

I'm not sure I would try to force Rage down someone's throat. It definitely takes some time--Peavy's writing meanders at times, and he has a knack for some really strange note selection & phrasing.

To be honest, I really can't say why I kept listening to Rage. I think Reflections of a Shadow was my first Rage album, and it had enough good tracks to keep me listening until the stranger stuff sunk in. That being said, I'm totally into it now, especially if I'm in the mood for something odd, without being completely prog (which takes a different mood altogether for me ;))

If you don't like Rage, I'm inclined to say "don't force it."
