Randy Ellefson - Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid

For any of you unfamiliar with his work, rock guitarist Randy Ellefson occupies a similar musical genre to that of Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai and Eddie Van Halen, with the sweeping instrumental guitar-driven tracks, the use of difficult fret work, complicated tapping techniques and stupidly fast guitar runs. The majority of songs also have a strong crunchingly heavy rhythm guitar, representing a backdrop to Ellefson's elegant solos and this heavier background music would draw favourable comparisons with some earlier Megadeth and Metallica (which Ellefson indeed cites as being influences). Some Things Are Better Left Unsaid is Ellefson's second album and the impressive thing about this piece of work is the fact that it was even recorded at all. A sufferer of tendonitis, which makes guitar playing (and pretty much anything else really), an extremely painful activity, Ellefson is limited as to how much guitar practice he is able to undertake a week, so this album took a lot longer to record than originally hoped. And its definitely worth it, especially for the sadistic solo on 'Pitter Patter'. The fact that he managed this with tendonitis is a testament to his hard work, determination and passion for music, he should be used as an inspiration to all other musicians who suffer in similar ways.
