Yea, it was a toss up to include Joyless & Solstafir. I had a list of 22 albums to be whittled down to the 16. Opted to include these over acts such as Ulver & Metallica. Ulver, because they'd tear the competition a new arsehole, Metallica because I didn't want to recall them wearing eyeliner.

The cover art to Ars Magika is marvelous.

a problem i think is that the way this is set up, thread 1 had mostly well-known albums everyone's heard and this one has mostly semi-obscure shit that EVEN I don't have... are these randomly distributed?

The premise of this tournament is bands who have shifted away from their metal roots. (Nothing to do with whether they went south or kept producing quality material.) All entrants later work will be covered in a subsequent tournament. Just go with the flow, eh!?

look i don't want to nitpick too much about shit that doesn't matter but i'm pretty sure gorgoroth still plays black metal, even though it is poor black metal now and used to be good black metal... there hasn't been a wimp-out, as such

Ahh yes, their inclusion in to the tournament was solely based on Ghaal's coming out party. Though one can make the argument that such limp wristed libidinous would be a move away from the pink. Now this is true, but it plants them knuckle deep in to the stink.

I really can't disparage the pole smoker, Runaljod - Gap Var Ginnunga is going to end up in my top 5 of 09. I must say, these tournaments are somewhat of a pain. Metallica is a more fitting entrant than every band listed above, but they've been discussed to death. Therefore, it seems more wisely to give the slot to a band such as TMK, essentially propelling someone to sample unknown material, rather than hearing the #1001 comment that Lars can't drum himself out of a dumpster.

These are the only ones I've heard. The Lux Occulta is better-than-average, VV never really clicked with me, Soilwork is useless mostly and everyone knows what I think of To Mega Therion*

Sentenced - Shadows of the Past Sentenced is one of the most under appreciated dm bands of all time.

Joyless - Unlimited Hate Forgotten Woods/Joyless can do no wrong. Though, I have yet to hear Race of Cain. Put off by the hideous coverart.

Solstafir - Í Blóði og Anda I've never heard a Theatre of Tragedy song, and I don't ever think I will. Solstafir is top shelf.
