Reaper playback and monitoring

Hello everyone,
after a long while I started up Reaper again, installed Adams custom stuff and got it working again with all plug ins (kinda weird that it all worked almost immediantly).
The only thing that is seriously getting on my nerves:
While I try to record another take on top of a previous take, the fucking file is playing on top of it while recording, and I can't manage to turn it off regardless what monitoring / playback options i choose.
Additionally, I can't get multiple takes to display on top of each other like before, now it's just that one take is completely filling the whole height of the track / overwriting it.

Right click > Item Settings > mute. Your takes aren't showing up in lanes? Surely there's a a preference option for that.
