Recent Work - southern rock / hardcore

Sounds great man, overall comes together really solid! I do feel the kick has slightly too much upper mids for my tastes; I know something super-clicky certainly wouldn't work here, but it makes it ever so slightly fatiguing IMO; also, I feel like I hear a bass boost on the snare that I personally would take down 1 dB or so, and to me the guitars are ever so slightly too bright. Can't stress enough how minor these quips are though, like I said, in the big picture perspective it all sounds great! (and surprisingly enough, I dig the song too)

thanks for the thoughts... yeah the guitars may be a touch bright... but i like how the whole mix has that bite. i think some of the harshness is coming from the mastering...!

Mix is awesome as usual, Jordan! How much natural drums are left in there? I think I need a pair of 451s, I've been struggling a lot with overheads lately, just not as crisp as what I hear in the mixes I like and your cymbals here sound great.

first : really cool vocal sound!
maybe the hihat could come up and also the ohs a tad.

heres what i dont like about the mix : guitars have no body and are a little empty.
is that podfarm?
maybe try something more dirty like lepous free ampsims.

would love to hear that stuff with a more marshall oriented sound, that would rock!

but great job sofar!

thanks for the input guys.

-vocals were sm7b, smashed with distressor on the way in and tons more in the box. Spent a lot of time on vocals, everything is doubled. Because of the grit in his voice, i couldn't use autotune or melodyne on the singing.... so i had to do it syllable by syllable using elastic pitch in pro tools.... quite challenging! i'm sure you'll be able to hear the minor flaws if you listen again with that in mind...

-kick and snare are completely replaced (kick is sampled from his kit). Toms are about 50/50 natural to sample, again the tom samples are from his kit. On this mix i did something that I haven't done before, which is using the Slate Z5 samples for both kick and snare to beef up my mono room mic, so no artificial verb on the drums. i really wish my room was big enough to get good natural room mics.

-gtrs are not podfarm, it's a 5150 and mesa 2x12. we actually tried a jcm800 but we wanted the bite that the 5150 has.

Adam - yeah I definitely like the 451s. I never have to add any high end to the OH mics, except for adding about 2db of 12 or 16k on the overall drum bus. They're pretty detailed but not harsh.

ah i guess i lied a bit. I did use a bricasti room verb on the toms only and eq'd it to try and match the sound of the room samples. Kick snare and everything else, no verb, only room samples.
and yeah i've been using the Bricasti impulses almost exclusively... they sound really good!

any possibility to get settings of your 5150? Or... maybe some good starting points;p I will start mic my amp next month I hope. Love you mixes btw!! :)

sounds very good!
somehow i dont like the gitars much, but it fits the southern rock thing so well that i love it in the mix hehe
the kick is ok, i just the think the snare's got too much low end.
and the mix is quite dry, but i guess that's some southern rock thing also^^
good work! and the song is also quite cool hehe

yeah we definitely wanted a somewhat raw sound, not too wet with effects. I think the thing I'm most happy with on this mix is the vocal sound.

A great starting point on the 5150 is:
Lead Gain - 3-4
Low - 6
Mid - 2
High - 6
Post - 3
Resonance - 7-8
Presence - 8-9

And a tubescreamer with 0 drive, tone about 11 o' clock, balance half.

I tweak it a little every project depending on the guitar and the player but those are the usually the setting give or take 1 notch.

Sounds fantastic!!!! Love the drumsound and the vocal-production.
The guitars are fine, I think you could bring up the bass guitar.

The mastering feels hot, maybe a bit too hot?

great work!!!

wow this is very very good!! this reminds me a bit of Paul Ebersold's mix of the band The Showdown which I think is a solid solid mix! awesome jordan!

What are your settings on the distressor...how hard are you hitting it on the way in and how much gain reduction? Also on the sm7 with a gritty singer like this do you have the hi pass and mid bump on on the sm7? and what pre? the vox are very impressive so just want to pick your brain :-)

Dude, this is just a really really really good mix.

If you want the 'bigger' sound, I say add some 400-800Hz to your guitars and add some verb to the snares.

<333

this is just a great mix man. who's the band?

thanks :)

For vox on the Distressor, i use 6:1 ratio, attack 4 release 3. Usually have the hi-pass button engaged as well. On this type of stuff i'm generally doing 8-10db of gain reduction on the way in. No hi-pass or mid bump on the sm7!
i compressed probably another 10 or 12db in the box, added a good helping of high end and voila...

they're called King Cobra, a local band around here.... myspace.com/wearekingcobra

also this was mastered by troy glennser
