Do yourself a favor and pick up this awesome, AWESOME fucking album. Okay, yes, they’re considered –core, screamo, emo, whatever, but don’t let that fool you for a minute! It has a totally awesome atmosphere to the whole thing and some parts even remind me of Tool and (newer) Katatonia.

This is the most ineffective recommendation I have ever seen. :p

Eh, well, it is a RECOMMENDATION, not a REVIEW, after all. Distinct difference. But yeah, just being lazy. 'twas late, you know?

I do hear the similarities though in the disc and considering many of the members here actually LOVE both those bands, I thought it might spark some interest.

Coincidence?

Actually, rather predictable.

The review was well written, detailed and eloborate, and pretty spot on on a lot of the parts. However, the subjective part (the part about your thoughts on the actual content of the disc that you have objections with), I disagree completely. Why?

I felt that this is much better than their last in terms of musicianship, atmosphere, and songwriting.

The drumming is VERY dynamic and really accentuates the songs when needed. The guitar playing is much more intelligent and intricate, yet not compromising the atmosphere and feel of each song (i.e. too technical). Bass locks in very tightly. I think the strongest point are the vocals as the lead vocalist can do just about anything within his vast range of screams on this one (much more varied than their previous efforts) as well as really awesome clean vocals that are appropriately entwined with the screaming/growling vocals. Also, the electronic elements really make particular parts much more captivating without being gimmicky.

The feel for the album flows more like one cohesive piece and it is a much darker effort than They're Only Chasing Safety. The songwriting on Define the Great Line also is a bit more varied (more clean parts and ambient pieces) and more mature sounding than They're Only Chasing Safety or The Changing of Times.

A few of my dislikes? It's a little too "biblical" or "religious" feeling at times, but overall the story thread is pretty cool. I also think the lyrics could have been better at certain times. Other than that though, I think it is great.

if this is the new one I heard it in a friends car, and I didn't pay attention as I was yelling or throwing things at kids. But the drumming sounded pretty good

Looks like we agree to disagree, Furious B. "DtGL" just didn't do much for me. :erk:

Yeah this is certainly more "unique" than most of this crap, but it's still crap. If you want to listen to something like this, do yourself a favor and get "Black Sails in the Sunset" by AFI or "The Mechanical Hand" by Horse. AFI still did this album about 6 years ago.

i saw a poster of this band once and i refuse to listen to this band on principle

sometimes it's just time to be close-minded for the sake of being close-minded, fuck emo

P.S The Katatonia/Tool comparison is downright laughable. Are you hearing what I'm hearing?

As far as the -core genres go, I recommend Shogun. Very mathy stuff with a heavier dose of metal, moreso than most -core bands

Hell, another track (first on the album) w/lyrics.

Shogun - Nation of Masochists

Gluttons for punishment,
all of you
flogged to the beat
of two thousand years of misery
torn by the wild tooth of contempt
thrown to lions
insatiable appetite for the flesh of man
heal yourself,
heal the holes in your hands
self negated by the hand of hope, eye of
death stared down selflessly
divine sadness cast down from above,
masochists glorify divinity
partake of your blood filled cup, consume for
salvation from pettiness
cast no light upon me
sleep your whole life, spread the sadness
worship madness
wake up, pound on your coffin
let your savior hear you,
let your savior find you,
let your savior save you,
let your savior fuck you

*double edit*

These lyrics in particular crack me the hell up.

Cacozielical Irony

your words leave me speechless
chop your language into pieces
slather saliva on your dictionless syllables
with the ignorant dull knife of your tongue
emulate prefabricated nuances,
designed like the rest of pop culture to
create comfort in repetition,
repetition, familiarity and the cliché
animate your hands to add dimension
but gesture not towards me or speak
your mindlessness though broken teeth
disarm your forging, splicing comma
hang at the end of this modifying rope
sacrifice your own voice your whole life
speak like you learned your own language
articulate like you were born with a tongue
dont just bounce between
the walls of your ears
worship the gods of grammar
worship, bow down
you dont have a voice of your own

*triple edit*

just found these lyrics and they keep getting better and better

Three A.M. Nice Tie

Deliver me from evil,
deliver me for one thousand dollars
my act of faith is the
perfect evolution of idol worship
press my hand against the TV,
be my cathode ray savior
my act of faith covers
the high price of playing god
if only your broadcast ministry
were prime time,
all the riches of a spiritual world
in need could be yours
instead, this farce of healing appeals
only to those most desperately famished
of greed and humor
one day our paths will cross and with my
fists of morality you will find that it
is you who is mistaken
about a great many things
is that gibberish the tongue of god?
or are you choking on your own blood?
die for my sins and burn in hell

For one, listen to the interludes as they sound VERY Tool-esque. But for the Tool comparisons listen to track 7; the first clean riff IS a Tool riff basically. Then after it goes into something that sounds like the last track on Viva Emptiness. Further, track 9 has electronic elements that are reminiscent of Katatonia and the first guitar riff is just like that of "Teargas." I believe if Tool ever went "core" track ten on this disc is what they'd write. Also, listen to the last track and it totally has little Katatonic tidbits here and there.

I'm not saying that the band was ever influenced by either of these bands (with Katatonia that is almost certainly not the case), but I can hear elements in their music is all.

I couldn't finish the song, sorry. Very generic metalcore, IMO. Go listen to Sikth or Between the Buried and Me to see how the genre can be done right.

Yeah, but that is much farther to the extreme and doesn't (well, minimally) have both harsh and clean vocals evenly (which is what I'm interested in hearing).

I've only heard sikth once or twice, but I actually own a Between the Buried and Me album. It's interesting that you list those two as being mealcore because, to be honest, the BtBaM album I own is almost strictly, straight-up metal. And these bands that are being categorized as metalcore and being written off due in most cases to a simple image or scene correlation strikes me as odd. Like, those bands are far more comparable to Cryptopsy than they are to Underoath. Know what I mean?

lamb of god
mastodon
black dahlia murder
the red chord

The first Red Chord album "Fused Together in Revolving Doors" is awesome, but Clients sort of bored me. the new A Life Once Lost CD was also pretty good. Thats about as much of that style I can get into though. Mastodon's Remission also kicked my ass though, mostly for the fantastic drumming.
