Recommendation: Underøath – Define the Great Line

i saw a poster of this band once and i refuse to listen to this band on principle

sometimes it's just time to be close-minded for the sake of being close-minded, fuck emo

and yet people STILL listen to Cult of Luna. i think being "open minded" is a buzzword people use so they can justify listening to crap.

I couldn't finish the song, sorry. Very generic metalcore, IMO. Go listen to Sikth or Between the Buried and Me to see how the genre can be done right.

Sikth are -core now? Wow, and I thought that genre tags had been twisted beyond all recognition previously...

Oh, and I couldn't give a shit what the band look like - the music they produce is what's important. A band could be a group of skateboarding midgets for all I care, as long as their shit sounds good.

dude, just like I said to jimbobhickville: those are METAL bands. They are NOT in the same vain as Underoath. Underoath is not metal. I would say they have metal elements to their music, but they are definitely more rock or "screamo" than metal.

Which goes to show that there is still the association of the "scene" in which Underoath (and probably many other bands from that vain) are from and thus receiving perhaps unwarranted harshness from this board. This principle is the exact same as way Ulver still holds a relatively METAL oriented crowd when they've ceased to be metal for nearly a decade.

Underoath are a self-proclaimed screamo band.

And what does that have to do with anything? This remark only goes to show your distain for the entire genre, which is perfectly fine. To make objective reviews based on that however is not really fair to the artist considering that you're already coming from a NEGATIVE position prior to even HEARING the music.

oh yeah, i was just naming some bands that i've seen people here write off as being "core" that are obviously not and shouldn't be lumped in with bands like underoath :saint:

Actually, I thought this would be interesting for a thread or discussion. I agree with the "open minded" thing. I think there is a huge difference that I think people mistakenly consider being "open minded" and having DEPTH in your tastes. Moreover, how to do you seperate QUALITY and TASTE in an objective sense. Is it possible to dislike something and still objectively feel it is of QUALITY? I think it would be cool to differentiate and discuss THAT.

Would you like them better if they were in a forest, wearing armor and corpsepaint? This is a serious question and goes out to anyone that lol'd at either of the bands now in question.

I try to disregard image as much as possible and an emo-ish pose isn't going to turn me away from a band forever (like the above post, I find any sort of "look at us, we're fucking metal!" uniform to be just as dumb), even if I happen to disdain anything associated with emo, which I'll admit prevents me from giving this band an objective listen (not Cult of Luna, who I've already been underwhelmed by)...

Nah, dude. My post was directed at jimbobhickville who was trying to decide what to call Underoath - metalcore or screamo. My post was an attempt to settle the matter.

Anyway, I like screamo. I own several screamo albums. I own all of Underoath's albums. I liked "They're Only Chasing Safety" a lot (look for my review in the archives). I was looking forward to "Define the Great Line." I was disappointed.

I hate this thread - not the original post, but what it's devolved into.

k i actually listened to this...man i wish the vocalist would just go through with it and slit his wrists already

i actually think the opening riff is ok, sounds almost like at the drive-in, until the vocals come in and the whole thing shits out its metaphorical guts all over the floor, and man does it stink
