Since I am a virgin when it comes to recording Jazz, I thought I might post it here and get some advice.

The band isn't particularly tight. It sucks quite a bit actually but it was a pleasing experience nonetheless and a nice break from rock music.

I feel especially concerned about the low end. The double bass was pretty wild in that area and I already cut a bit of lows but maybe it's not enough.

Not sure what I'm doing with the stereo panorama. I panned the guitar and the bass slightly in opposite directions and compensated with a hint of reverb...

I don't want to overdo things.

It sounds not bad at all but I'd like it more dirty sounding, personal taste. You can listen to Wes montgomery as reference (for panning too).

Thanks. Do you mean the whole stuff or just the guitar sound? Cause this is DI unfortunately. We recorded the amp (an old Guyatone which sounded delightful ) but there was too much leakage but maybe we'll reamp it.

For jazz music it's said that the kick drum must be felt more than heard, I hear or feel nothing. How did you record the drums?

Give the mic with the bleed a try, blended with the DI should give the vive that guitar tone is missing.

Really? I hear the kick, it's soft but it's there.
Maybe I can push it a bit more but like you said, it's not supposed to be loud.
Drums where a pair of sdc for OH (mk012 oktavamod), a kick mic (d112) and a mono room (Apex 210).

Drums solo'ed:

Believe me, the amp mic makes the cymbals way too harsh. Already tried it.

Dirty: I mean the whole mix actually but especially OH. Slightly, not too much.
Also you could pan the guitar to the right (50/60% maybe) and the bass to the left (40% approx.). See how it sounds to you. I'd add some very subtle reverb on the guitar too. I think the drums sound great.

Good job for a rock/metal guy ;)

before hearing i would have said it's all about the room you create for them (as a unit), but after listening it sounds like jazz should sound :-)

edit: here the guitar comes maybe a bit too loud (to add something productive)
