Recording drums with only 8 inputs

Hey I was wondering if you guys could help me out. I have a UX8 interface with 8 inputs. I also have a 16 channel mixer (8 mic and 8 line inputs). So far I have been recording drums directly into my interface and doing all mixing in cubase. But if a drummer has 4 toms, i'm left with no extra mic input to use for talkback. If any of you guys have an 8 input interface, how do you do talkback when all inputs are taken?

I could probably incorporate the mixer but it only has 2 stereo outputs, one submix output and one mainmix output. I'm sure there is a way but it does my head in trying to understand how to work it. Was hoping some of you could shed light on how you manage your inputs when recording drums?

Thanks

Ummm....I dont know if this is stating the obvious...but the answer to that question is... to get up out of the chair...take a few steps.... use your voice and talk to them that way. Thats a no brainer answer I think. I mean, thats what I did when I only had 8 channels and had all 8 used. I survived it. ;)
Maybe someone can give you an idea to rig a way to eliminate the few steps you'd otherwise have to take to talk to the band.

An adat interface for more channels wouldnt help, because the UX8 doesnt have the input for it. Maybe there is a way you can use another usb device with the ux8 at the same time. I dont know. That would be something that one of the other dudes would have to clarify.

Worst case scenario....youll have to strut that ass to talk to the band. Which isnt so bad, unless you do it in higheels...which I can certainly say I DONT suggest. :Spin:

Most people have a monitor controller or headphone amp of sorts with talkback.

Would I just have to google headphone amps to find those units?

I have done the whole yelling thing, and getting up and walking in there but its very unprofessional and when you have to stop and start to discuss parts it gets very tiring when recording multiple songs.

So do you know if there would be a way to connect the mixer in this process to make that work?

Drummers headphone send goes from the UX8 into the mixer.
Talkback mic goes into the mixer.
Drummers headphones plugged into the mixer.

Simples!

Can't belive we got to 7 posts before someone suggested this.

If the mixer doesn't have a headphone out then buy a cheap headphone amp.
