recording to a external HD?

i'm a bit on a budged to buy a new computer, so would you guys advice record to a external HD? i don't plan to record more than 2 tracks at time.


would i get away with this?

M-audio Firewire Solo (FW400) ---> Notebook (i5 / 8gb ram) ---> External HD (USB 3.0 /10.000 rpm)

I've never liked the idea, i'm sure its ok though and you wont do too much better than a USB 3 10k drive.

Changing to an internal SATA drive solved a lot of instability issues for us, though our external HDs are only "ordinary" USB2, 7200rpm. We could get up to 35%, maybe 40% on the CPU meter in PT9 until it would start to crap out. Dropouts a-plenty! Now, I've been pushing it over 50% easily.. (Haven't really needed more!)

I basically use that setup. It will do that and then some. No probs with USB3 so far.

I never had an issue recording to a FW400 drive, and I daisy chained it through my interface.

I have 4 internal SATA drives now, so I don't bother. I still backup to that drive though.
