Rediscovery Pt. 2

I'd love this thread to go on forever. Magic tune.

Just on V's sound, I think the less prominent sound works well in the context of the music. TiO had a blazing, thick sound which I love too, probably more than V.

I'd be curious to find out what influenced the band/producer's decision to go for the more subdued sound. Especially in comparison to the other albums.

While this isn't my favorite track on V, I do think it's really cool.

I love the production on V as well. It's SUCH a contrast to The Odyssey especially. The balance of everything on it is so perfect, and I especially like how prominent the symphonic elements are. More than on any other album, I can actually imagine SymX playing with an orchestra. Well...the song "The Odyssey" pulls it off very nicely, too, but as far as consistently doing this, V definitely wins.

well, i dont know if its the guitar sound in particular, but in general the album sounds really muffled to me. It's hard to notice unless you listen to it right after another album though

The only thing I even noticed about the sound of 'V' was that the vocals are low in the mix compared to other SyX albums. I noticed that the first time I listened to it and it stuck with me for a long time. Now, I don't even notice it, but I never had a problem with the guitar sound on 'V'. Now, on the Odyssey, that's another story...

Yeah, on The Odyssey the guitar'll blow your head off on some songs.

I do agree that the vocals are low in the mix on V, although I only noticed it after I got some other SymX albums (considering V set the standard for me). The choral harmonies in particular don't seem as prominent as in others...but I really don't mind that, because I have other albums for when I want to hear the choral arrangements up front.

Fantastic reading. It's brilliant to read other people's joy when hearing this song. It's my fave song of Sym X (and non Dream Theater song) and I am blown away every time I hear it. All 5 members are on top of their game, and Sir Russell is mighty impressive especially in those melodic parts.

I'm going to listen to it right now. :)

to add to the comments on V: hearing the first disc of Live on the Edge of Forever makes me enjoy V even more. Whether it's an extended solo, an accentuated vocal hit, a part played on the axe that was keyboard on the album, or a bass lick that wasn't as noticable on the album, hearing V live just adds to it's brilliance. I only wish that they had played the entire thing. Is there a reason why they didn't want to? Did they want more time to play material from other albums? In my view, if you release a concept album and then tour it, you either play a couple of song's or the whole deal, not 2/3, but I wont complain with what I got.

Interesting, Rediscovery Pt. 2 is my least favorite track on V. Don't get me wrong, I think it is still an great piece, just not as great as the others on the cd (excluding the segue's of course).

This song is indeed f'ing amazing. I actually have a pretty cool story about this song. Well, it's not actually cool, but now you can't say I didn't warn you.

One night after I got done in the gym, I was sitting in my car listening to the end of V, and then this song came on. It was dark, and a storm was brewing over the mountains. There's one point in the song where it's coming out of a soft part, and the mood gets very dark and, well, bad-ass. Just as the guitar did this cool run-like thing, lightning spread out from over the mountains all over the sky, just branching out more and more. I got chills, and then a big grin on my face. That's one of the coolest music-nature moments I've ever had.

Done as in the "hot aerobics instructor" done, or "sparring partner gave me a real touch up" done?

And to my American ears, these sound like the same thing.

Maybe because "touch up" seems too close to "feel up"? ;)

touch up = beat up to all those with American ears (and eyes) :)

Now can my American friends shed some light on the context of 'got done'? I'll assume (due to his euphoric state) he got done as in - had a 'smokey' (no it's not tobacco) to die for - :dopey:

Yeah, "done" as in laid, sexed, slammed, poked, rolled in the hay. "Smokey?" Is that the same as our "hottie" = beautifu woman?
