References to the Sun in Viking metal...What's with them?

For instance Wintersun mentions something about the sun and apparently Solefald forever curses the sun. What is with it? Does it have to do with the fact that scandinavia experiences alot of prolonged sunlight during the summer? Is the sun a reference to something else?
