Remakes

Too many good covers to name, but some of the worst:

Brainstorm's unlistenable version of Wooly Bully

Reel Big Fish's evisceration of Take On Me

Del Amitri's "They must have been drunk when they recorded this" version of Brown Eyed Girl

Oratory-Eternal Flame(Bangles)

Dam good cover and album, the cover was just icing on the cake.

Powergod - Soldiers Under Command (Stryper)
Therion - Crazy Nights (Loudness)
In Flames - Land of Confusion (Genesis)
Seven Witches - See You In Hell (Grim Reaper)
Sinergy - Hanging on the Telephone (Blondie)
Silent Force - All Guns Blazing (Judas Priest)
Doro - Only You (Kiss)
Primal Fear - Metal Gods (Judas Priest)
Iced Earth - Burnin' For You (BOC)

I like those off the top of my head.

Lemur Voice - Beat It (Michael Jackson)

Always thought that was an odd choice for a cover, but hey...it's their CD! :)

And, they put in a funky reggae beat to the chorus...huh? Oh...which reminds me...do you know why Michael went shopping at Walmart?

My personal favorites:
Angra--"Painkiller" and "Mama"
Fates Warning--"Closer To The Heart"
Vanden Plas--"Kiss Of Death"
Angel Dust--"Spotlight Kid," "Temple Of The King," and "Killer"
Eidolon--"Diary Of A Madman"
Judas Priest--"Diamonds And Rust"
Metal Church--"Highway Star"
Silent Force--"All Guns Blazing"
Steel Prophet--"Gangland"
Stratovarius--"Blackout"
Dokken--"From The Beginning" and "One"
Helloween--Almost the entire "Metal Jukebox" album
Dream Theater--The good majority of their covers. Always dead on!

Covers I wish to erase from my memory:
Angel Dust--"Easy Livin'"
Blind Guardian--"Barbara Ann," "Mr. Sandman," and "Surfin' U.S.A."
Demons & Wizards--"Immigrant Song"
Iced Earth--Almost all of "Tribute To The Gods"
Judas Priest--"Johnny B. Goode"
Sonata Arctica--"I Want Out" and "Still Loving You"
Nitro--"Cat Scratch Fever"
Altar--"The Trooper"
Six Feet Under--Anything!

Stay metal. Never rust.

Those are good ones. Vanden Plas and Steel Prophet were/are both excellent with covers. A few I would like to add:

Great White - Babe I'm Leaving You (Led Zeppelin)
Avalon - Alien Nation (Scorpions)
Flotsam and Jetsum - Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting (Elton John)
Doro - Egypt The Chains Are On (Dio)
Dimmu Borgir - Metal Heart (Accept) I don't even like DB at all, but the song sounds cool with the death growl.

hahaha, yep. THAT is an amazingly weird-but-fun-in-its-own-way cover tune. I was first introduced to it on the way to ProgPower Europe in 1999, in someone's apartment in Tilburg, NL, and it was definitely a "what the FUCK is THIS?" moment. (I saw 'em play later that night, so all was well in the world...they didn't play that song, though. :tickled: )

A couple of months ago I trotted it out at KimK's barbecue, to, ummm, mixed reviews. :D

Another odd choice of a song to cover by a band, but they do a great job with it (and put it on their live CDs): Therion's cover of "Summernight City." Yep, by ABBA. Wouldn't surprise me if we hear it at PP, really.
:Spin:

Not exactly all power/melodic/progressive, but a few more which spring to my mind:

Megadeth - "These Boots" (Nancy Sinatra)
Voivod - "Astronomy Domine" (Pink Floyd)
Voivod - "21s Century Schizoid Man" (King Crimson)
The Gathering - "In Power We Entrust The Love Advocated" (Dead Can Dance)
Forbidden - "Victim Of Changes" (Judas Priest)
Chastain - "Barracuda" (Heart)
Meanstreak - "Barracuda" (Heart)
Dreams Of Sanity - "The Phantom Of The Opera" (Andrew Lloyd Webber)
Mekong Delta - "Night On A Bare Mountain" (Modest Mussorgsky)
Coroner - "Der Mussolini" (DAF)
Helstar - "He´s A Woman, She´s A Man" (The Scorpions)
Tori Amos - "Raining Blood" (Slayer)

I also add:

Orphaned Land - Mercy
Therion - Summer night city
HIM - Wicked Game
Megadeth - Paranoid
Cradle of filth - Hallowed be thy name

Queensryche - Scarborough Fair (not a song I would have expected to come across well as a QR cover, but it's not bad)

Angra - Wuthering Heights (far better than the original...of course, I never cared for Kate Bush much, anyway)

And, if we're straying outside of prog/power metal bands, I'll add:

Faith No More - War Pigs (KILLER version)
Zebra - The Ocean (Randy Jackson does his *best* Plant imitation)

As far as Fates' cover of "Closer to the Heart"....that was definitely the highlight of the "Working Man" Rush tribute...

Dragonland, covering the theme to The Neverending Story. Cheesy as all hell, but I like it. :) (I have the mp3 but I'm not sure where their cover originally appeared.)

Best non-power or prog cover: Godhead, "Eleanor Rigby" from the Power Tool Stigmata CD

wow...just dug up that dragonland cover of neverending story. very high on the cheese factor, but so great.

a couple cool ones are:
-Suncaged - Caught in a Web Medley(Dream Theater)
-Dream Theater - Achilles Last Stand(Led Zeppelin)
a couple bad ones:
-Moon of Steel - You Not Me(Dream Theater) THE ABSOLUTE WORST!!!!
-Demons & Wizards - Immigrant Song

Me need these MP3s!!!

Hmmm...... well not being particularly a Zep fan, memorizing the correct name of all of their songs would be about as enjoyable as memorizing Pi 20 decimal places back or so. I'm just not that interested in doing it..... but thanks for the correction. :loco:
